Here are a few new songs and videos I heard and saw yesterday and this morning that I thought were worth spreading around

NADER SADEK

Nader Sadek is an Egyptian set designer, visual effects director, and composer. His well-received 2011 debut album In the Flesh featured a host of name-brand guest musicians performing Sadek’s compositions. It made several of our “best of 2011” year-end lists, including one from guest contributor Tamás Kátai, the man behind the brilliant band Thy Catafalque, who wrote about it as follows: “This is exactly like Morbid Angel and Chimera-era Mayhem mixed together. Odd, exciting, dark death metal exploiting the contributing musicians’ ability, charisma, and character to the maximum.”

On February 27, Sadek plans to self-release a live CD/DVD called In the Flesh. It’s a video of the first performance of In the Flesh on November 20, 2011, and includes the album’s original line-up — drummer Flo Mournier (Cryptopsy), guitarist Rune Eriksen (Aura Noir, ex-Mayhem), bassist Novy Nowak (ex-Behemoth, ex-Vader), and vocalist Steve Tucker (ex-Morbid Angel) — plus guest guitarist Sean Frey and operatic backing vocalist Carmen Simoes (Ava Inferi).

Today, GunShyAssassin premiered a song from the live CD, “Petropilia”. It’s completely obliterating and remorseless, a cacophony of blackened death rising up from oil-soaked vaults deep beneath the earth and catching fire in a great conflagration. All the performances sound fantastic, but I have to give an extra round of applause to Flo Mournier’s off-the-charts drumming. And I can’t wait to see the video of this show.

ROTTING CHRIST

Take it from me, the new Rotting Christ album is brilliant. Its name is ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ (“Do What Thou Wilt”), and it’s scheduled for release by Season of Mist in North America on March 5. We will have a review soonish, but for now you can get yet another taste of the album because the title track “Kata Ton Demona Eaftou” is now streaming. To check out a previous song stream from the album (“In Yumen – Xibalba”), go here.

The up-tempo title track rivets the attention right from the start with darting, jabbing riffs, and it doesn’t let up. It thunders, rips, and smashes, but it also includes the melody of a flute (or pipes) and a hammering vocal chant. Check it out below.

KRYPTS

Finnish death metal band Krypts released a very promising self-titled EP in 2011 (available for free download here), and on February 19 Dark Descent plans to unveil their debut album, Unending Degradation, featuring the eye-catching cover art above by T. Ketola; a vinyl release will follow via Me Saco Un Ojo.

Yesterday, Krypts began streaming a track from the new album named “Beneath the Archaic”, and a second song from the album, “Open the Crypt”, is also available. You can hear both below.

These Finnish bastards want to grind your bones to bake their bread. The music is ghastly, ghostly, gruesome, and gigantic, lumbering death/doom with a massive low end and eerie guitar melodies winding their way through the sucking muck. This album has the earmarks of a real 2013 stand-out.

The album can be pre-ordered here, and the band’s official site is at this location. They also have a Bandcamp page here.

  1. I’m in the minority with all the people I know, but I can never get past the “cheesy” guitar tone of RC on record. It sounds much better live at least.

  2. Krypts is undoubtedly something to look out for and for Rotting Christ its a given. As for Nader Sadek, well more cause to slice open your ears and arrange stuff back again.

  3. I heard the RC like last week. It was a great song, much better than In Yumen.

Krypts is definitely interesting, might keep my eye on them.
