Here are a couple of items that caught my eye last night.

NEW DEICIDE TOUR

Word has escaped that Deicide will be headlining a U.S. tour this October, though to be honest, the supporting bands are the ones that have really peaked my interest: DisgorgeNecronomicon, and Broken Hope.

I’ve been a fan of Montreal’s Necronomicon for years, and their 2013 album Rise of the Elder Ones is quite good. San Diego’s Disgorge has occupied a storied place in the annals of brutal death metal, and they’re now at work on their first album in eight years, with a revised line-up (Angel Ochoa behind the mic and Diego Soria on bass). And speaking of revivals, Chicago’s Broken Hope will be delivering their first album in 14 years when Century Media releases Omen of Disease in the same month that this tour occurs.

In other words, there’s going to be a full slate of new metal from a group of veteran death metal carnivores, wholly without regard to whether Deicide manages to bring it hard at the top of the bill.

Here’s the schedule, which I’m selfishly happy to see includes Seattle:

10/2 Atlanta, GA @ Masquerade
10/3 Charlotte, NC @ Tremont Music Hall
10/4 Springfield, VA @ Empire
10/5 Wilmington, DE @ Mojo 13**

SOCIOPATHIC MIXTAPE, VOL. 5

In May I wrote a post about a Philadelphia-based web project named Sociopathic Sound that’s in the process of transitioning into a record label, with plans not only to sign bands for new releases but also to re-issue previous works on vinyl or as digitally remastered releases. Since opening the doors last year, Sociopathic Sound has also been compiling free mixtapes (with permission of the bands and labels whose songs have gone into the comps). At the time of that first post, they had just released the Vol. 4 compilation, and now they’ve released Vol. 5.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest comp:

First, it includes (gasp) 110 songs. That’s right, One Hundred Ten.

Second, it’s free on Bandcamp.

And third, it once again includes some hot stuff. You’ll see previously unreleased tracks by the likes of Noisear, Hivesmasher, and Wormrot, as well as songs by Antigama, Quest of Aidance, Ilsa, Hate, Enshadowed, Hivesmasher, Cyanic, Warbeast, Euglena, Nervecide, Cleric, Scordatura, Dephosphorus, Wormrot, A Band of Orcs, Wake, and The Secret — and that’s just picking some of the excellent bands we’ve written about here at NCS.

It also includes tracks by other bands whose music I’ve only recently discovered and am digging — such as Maranatha, Nolentia, and Purify the Horror (whose Untitled EP was just released by Sociopathic yesterday and whose line-up includes Anil Carrier of Binah and many other bands).

Check out the music via the player below, and go here to see the full line-up and get the download:

  1. You just pray Deicide don’t do what they do best, and cancel. 😉

  2. Awesome, thanks so much for continuing to aid our efforts in getting the SSR name out there. While all five of the compilations in our series are accomplishments I’m very proud of, gotta admit I’m impartial to the newest one; to my personal taste (total grind addict above all else, closely followed by death metal, and really the extremist of the extreme music), Vol. 5 feels like a crowning achievement. I purposely tracked the fifth installment with the intention of it exhibiting a sharp contrast to the fourth volume (which begins with a very long, drawn out sludge/doom song by PRIMITIVE MAN)……to this end, Vol. 5 begins at a relentless pace that doesn’t let up until the 11th track (ILSA’s “The Scream” serves to slow things down while keeping it absurdly heavy) – the first ten songs are all firmly rooted in grindcore, and I honestly don’t think any one of the previous four start out as intensely as the new one.

And, of course, 110 tracks makes it the longest effort to date. Actually, I should point out that I tracked volumes 4 & 5 simultaneously, choosing songs out of a giant pool of 200 (the original idea was for each to contain 100, but ultimately a hundred wasn’t enough for the fifth!), but Vol. 5 ended up being delayed due to major revisions/overhauls – I kept on changing up the track list and adding/deleting bands to ensure I felt entirely great about every single song as well as the manner of transitioning from one to the next.

It’s a ton of music to digest; understandably some fans may feel overwhelmed by such an immense comp, but I sincerely hope everyone goes through each song/band because there’s something for everyone – don’t let the grindcore filled beginning fool you, I believe there’s more variety on Vol. 5 than any previous mixtape. Glad to be switching my focus to label releases; I’m unsure of how we’ll ever top the newest edition, and I’d rather not even think about that for a good while 🙂

Regardless, I hope word about this project continues to spread, as it’s all about helping fans learn about new artists they may have never otherwise come across while also having a hand in the expansion of the band’s fan bases! Thanks again for reporting this story; we’ll continue providing you with updates, and private album streams/downloads of original SSR material when it becomes available. You rock!

    • It really is a jaw-dropping accomplishment — actually, all the comps, but this one especially. Thank you for what I’m sure was a hugely time-consuming effort, and for rounding up music from so many good bands for the benefit of fans.

    • I gotta check this out. SHRED!!!

  3. That photo just makes me think Glen’s become the Death Metal version of Varg.

  4. i totally agree, the supporting bands on the Deicide tour are the main draw, very cool!
