Jonny Pettersson

(We invited Jonny Pettersson — vocalist and riff-maker at Wombbath, Lieutenant General at Just before Dawn, and vocalist/guitarist at Ashcloud (among many other projects) — to let us share with our readers his year-end list for 2015, and we are grateful that he agreed!)

I started this list thinking that this year it would be easy to pick the top 10. Halfway through I realized that, as always, there are too many good releases to make easy choices.

Desolate Shrine-The Heart of The Netherworld

1. Desolate Shrine – The Heart of the Netherworld (Death metal)

Album of the year! A perfect album down to every last second.

The Grotesquery-Curse of the Skinless Bride

2. The Grotesquery – Curse of the Skinless Bride (Death metal)

Excellent album from an excellent song-writer.

Grave-Out of Respect For the Dead

3. Grave – Out of Respect for the Dead (Death metal)

The legends are back with an album that lives up to their legendary status.

Infected Chaos-The Wake of Ares

4. Infected Chaos – The Wake of Ares (Death metal)

Continuation of Chaosreign, and I must say Infected Chaos takes the best parts of Chaosreign and makes them better.

Malevolent Creation-Dead Man's Path

5. Malevolent Creation – Dead Man’s Path (Death metal)

MC is back with a bang!

Temple of Baal-Mysterium

6. Temple of Baal – Mysterium (Death metal)

This album is full of dark and atmospheric passages that take Temple of Baal to a much darker place than most death metal bands.

Cattle Decapitation-The Anthropocene Extinction

7. Cattle Decapitation – The Anthropocene Extinction (Death metal)

I have to admit, I was not a big fan of CD’s earlier albums, but with 2012’s Monolith of Inhumanity I fell head over heels for this band. And with The Anthropocene Extinction they just got an even tighter grip on me.

Entrails-Obliteration

8. Entrails – Obliteration (Death metal)

It is about time we stopped calling the last few years’ wave of old school Swedish death metal bands a trend now. Entrails is a perfect example that the boss HM-2 peddle is here to stay.

Vredesmord-1000 Aldrig Nog

9. Vredesmord – 1000 Aldrig Nog (Crust punk)

Swedish crust punk showing the strength of Swedish d-beat at its best.

Down Among the Dead Men - Exterminate! Annihilate! Destroy!

10. Down Among the Dead Men – Exterminate! Annihilate! Destroy! (Death metal)

Second album on the list featuring Rogga Johansson. Crusty death metal made the right way!

Honourable Mentions
(The list of following albums might as well have ended up on the top 10 list, as they are equally as good!)

11. Cut up – Forensic Nightmares

12. Revolting – Visages of the Unspeakable

13. Feral – Where Dead Dreams Dwell

14. High on Fire – Luminiferous

  1. never mind the list, IS THAT FUCKING BEARD EVEN REAL?!?

  2. I have serious beard envy now.

    • Who wouldn’t? 🙂 Well, I mean perhaps our female readers…

      • His beard is longer than my dreads, and I haven’t cut my hair in about 10 years! I seriously wonder how long he’s been growing it. Maybe like all things legendary it’s origins harken back to days before memory 😉

  3. I totally approve of Gravesite, Ravens Creed, and Corrosive Carcass…

  4. Another list? I can’t afford this, Islander! Seriously, though. I love all the different perspectives/lists at the end of the year on this site. I have been looking forward to it.

    • I know you’re joking, but I also know we’re delivering a ton of lists! However, especially with the guests we’ve invited to share their reviews, I’ve made an effort to bring a diversity of tastes and perspectives. There’s so much good music out there that (at least for me), it really helps to bring these different perspectives to bear.

I saw Jonny’s personal list on FB, and I thought it was great, and a good example of what I’m talking about above. I’m very happy that he agreed to let us share it!

  5. Honestly, the lists on this site tend to put a hurting on my wallet, buuuuuut, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love to spend my hard earned cash on music above all else.

  6. Great list! It’s great to see Rogga getting a nod 😀

  7. Lot of great picks, and Infected Chaos is a cool new find for me. This is also reminding me that I have to carve out some time for Desolate Shrine, though I’m quickly running out of hours to slot for the dozens of releases I’m now meaning to get to 🙂
