Dark Funeral-Where Shadows Forever Reign

(Andy Synn revives an old, irregular series of album reviews in haiku. Three reviews of three lines each come after the jump. With music, of course.)

REVIEWS IN HAIKUS
It’s been quite a while
Since I’ve done one of these. Let’s
See if I still can!

DARK FUNERAL – WHERE SHADOWS FOREVER REIGN

New singer. Same sound.
But who needs change when praising
Satan feels this good?

Glorior Belli-Sundown

GLORIOR BELLI – SUNDOWN (THE FLOCK THAT WELCOMES)

Back in the saddle.
Less blues. More Black. Bigger riffs.
A “welcome” return.

Whitechapel-Mark of the Blade

WHITECHAPEL – MARK OF THE BLADE

Heartfelt but hollow
Blunted by its toothless angst
This blade has no edge

  1. Man, I love haikus!
    These are all quite excellent.
    Keep it up, Andy!

  2. I always like these.

  3. You are still quite able
    to capture and convey art
    in a haiku form.

I’m not sure that was even a legit haiku. You still can, and you still got it. The arrangement is an art form by itself, but capturing and conveying the essence of an album in such a short arrangement, now that’s art.

  4. Whitechapel haiku was legit.

    • Thank you. I’m actually quite pleased how that one turned out.

Though I am saddened that the album wasn’t better, as I do consider myself a fan.

      • Yeah! Im not a huge fan of the album, compared to the other two, but the haiku smacked of master class poetry. 😛

  5. It really seemed like Whitechapel were getting it together…

the other two albums here are pretty good, though!

    • I’d disagree actually, I’d say they were definitely in a creative slump on “Our Endless War”, and though they’ve tried to arrest it here (by, essentially, copying Slipknot), they haven’t really managed it.

Put simply although they do try some stuff that’s “new” (to them at least) on here, it’s also all stuff that’s quite middle of the road and been done to death by other bands.

Basically whenever a band writes a song purely “for the fans” or “for the haters”… it’s time to worry that the creative well is running dry.

  6. Man I’d forgotten completely about reviews in haikus! So good to see a return. Dark Funeral and Glorior Belli are hitting all the right buttons.

    • Ha, I did not know this column was so popular.

I’ll try and keep it in more regular circulation from now on.
