Meshuggah-The Violent Sleep of Reason

While scrambling to get our second of four premieres ready to post today, I received an alert from my comrade DGR that Meshuggah had revealed a new lyric video for the song “Nostrum” off their new album The Violent Sleep of Reason. And so of course I dropped everything and scurried over to YouTube to give this thing a look and a listen.

It’s a 360-degree video that allows you to admire the artwork created by Keerych Luminokaya. As for the song, holy shit is it a heavy, hammering beast, an absolute crusher, highlighted by every other good thing else we’ve come to expect from this band — jaw-dropping drumwork, brilliant rhythmic interplay, raw, hair-raising vocals, and in this case some truly scintillating and frenzied lead guitar performances, coupled with glimpses of cosmic melody.

I’ve only heard the song once, but my immediate reaction is that it’s one of the best things Meshuggah have ever done.

The Violent Sleep of Reason will be released by Nuclear Blast on Oct. 7th, and you can order it here:

  1. Definitely one of the best songs they have every created….. never thought Haake would surpass what he did on Bleed and Pravus, but by jove he has…. this track has a jazzy thrashy swing to it that reminds me so much of Neil Peart and Dave Weckl and Dave Lombardo – this is real craft. And that fuckin guitar solo and riffage. Frederik and Marten and Dick have lost it brilliantly more than ever. And Jens’ vocals are better than ever. He does deliver the vitriol in a very organic way on this. Fuckin love. This is the track to the end of the world.

  2. I like this, in fact I like almost everything this band has done. My only criticism would be that the guitar soloing is completely predictable. I get this guy has his own style and sound, but I could hear the solo in my head the minute the song started and then when the soloing kicked in, I felt like I was clairvoyant.

  3. An awesome track, now I’m even more excited to get my hands on the new album 🙂

  4. This album is sounding all kinds of awesome

  5. I can’t get into this style of metal at all. Industrial metal. Tried to listen to Meshuggah many times but always the stop-start chug chugging style just drives me up a wall.

  6. The drumming frenzy that kicks off during the guitar solo and culminates right after it is simply jawdropping. I have no idea what Haake is doing there.

  7. Damn I can’t wait for this album, their last one was so good and I was wary the next one wouldn’t be as good, but hearing this song kills that fear.
