Phoenix Rising 2 by Spektyr

Yes indeed, a new year dawns. And while we’re not yet finished with our LISTMANIA 2016 orgy, we’re also looking ahead to what 2017 will bring. I spent some time this weekend perusing record label pages and e-mails, and picking through the detritus of my own memories, in an effort to compile a list of forthcoming releases that have peaked my interest. Those are assembled in a giant list after the jump.

Two things: First, this post is also an invitation for our readers to share in the Comments the albums you’re looking forward to this coming year — so please do that. It will make this post considerably more interesting.

And second, though the following list is a big one, it’s far from comprehensive. It’s focused mainly on the first quarter of the year, and I also ran out of time before snooping on news from all the labels I usually follow — and I’m 100% certain that I’ve overlooked a lot of exciting releases (both self-releases and label offerings) that I know are coming or have seen rumors about. That’s why you’re here… to help do my work for me. Lord knows, I need the help.

UPDATE: I’ve added to this list since originally posting it yesterday, and will probably continue to do that at least for a few days as I remember things I missed or see new announcements.

  1. That Profound Lore list is setting my nether regions all a-tingle!

  2. Needs more Bindrune/Nordvis

    • “What’s next for the label?

More releases—Waldgefluster, new Falls of Rauros in 2017, Panopticon, Nechochwen, Murg, Stilla, Paths, Alda, Krigsgrav… so much to do. Sharpen your PayPal accounts, folks! We are wandering out of the woods and into your pockets.”

-Marty from Bindrune in a Decibel interview. Hard to say which of these will be this year or next, though. And some are out already I think?

      • Yeah, Murg, Stilla, Waldgefluster came out after this interview, so would expect material from Falls of Rauros, Paths, Alda, Panopticon, Nechochwen, Krigsgrav sometime in 2017. Short turnaround time for Krigsgrav if so.

        • ..and Panopticon. The rate at which Lunn manages to put out quality material is ridiculous

          • The Panopticon release that has been announced (and who knows, maybe there will be something else later) is “Revisions of the Past”, a double-vinyl that collects re-mixed and re-mastered versions of the early albums ”On The Subject Of Mortality” and ”Social Disservices”.

    • I did some quick checking and added to this post what I found. There are probably more things in the works from those labels.

  3. Pure speculation on my part, but I am hoping for new releases by Thou, Yob, False, Nechochwen, Woe, Abysmal Dawn, Converge, Crypt Sermon, Havukruunu, Mutoid Man, Obsequiae, Taake and Ahab in 2017. Maybe Horrendous, maybe Mgla.

Less speculation: Enigma by Lluvia (Fallen Empire) should hopefully be out soon. Tombs are working on their debut for Metal Blade. Plus new Noisem full length on Relapse.

  4. Good stuff coming from HHR, DDR, Prodound Lore and Iron Bonehead can do no wrong in my eyes

    Stuff I know is coming:
    White Death – S/T
Ululatum Tollunt – Quantum Noose of Usurpation EP

Stuff Im not sure about, but would love to see:

    Negative Plane
    Sacriphyx
    Grave Upheaval
Spectral Voice (pretty sure this will be out in 2017)
    Heresiarch

  5. Already a fine number of albums to look forward to this year and these are only the early releases. New Fjoergyn comes out also in February and I hope Mastodon will follow soon. The Ocean announced recording of a new album but it could come out in early 2018.

On a speculative side, I would love to see new albums from The Faceless, Triptykon, Vallenfyre, Monolord, Aosoth, Svartidauði, A Hill to Die Upon and others.

  6. A few off the top of my head:

The Devil And The Almighty Blues (Announced)
    Procession (Announced)
    Thy Will Be Done (Announced)
    Arche (Speculation)
    Faal (Speculation)
    Swamp Witch (Speculation)
    Vokonis (Announced)
    Sleep (Speculation)
    Witch Mountain (Speculation)
    Worship (Speculation)
    Into Eternity (Speculation)
    Witherfall (Announced)

  7. I’m so excited for the new Immolation record. Dying Fetus, Portal and Kreator are also stuff I’m itching to hear.

In terms of stuff I want to come out this year, new Triptykon, Carcass, Converge, The Ocean and Mastodon albums would make me happy.

  8. New Woe and Wolvhammer have essentially been confirmed given the fact that both are either entering the studio soon, or are already in the studio (the latter in Woe’s case). New Chrome Waves is confirmed. Benighted in Sodom was supposed to release an album before the end of the year (source from a fb post circa q3 this year) but I assume Matron’s got other stuff going on and fell behind. Speculating on releases from Hateful Abandon (they had a release for 2016 scheduled that never made an appearance) and Black Pyramid.

And not metal, but Liar In Wait has at least one release that’s supposed to come out this year. I spoke to both Adam and Jeff on the west coast tour with Taake/Wolvhammer and they said they’ve got a split planned with the possibility of some other release.

    • Those are all great pieces of news. I also did see Jeff Wilson posting on FB to confirm that new Wolvhammer and Chrome Waves should be released this year.

  9. Hamferð finished recording their new album in the fall of 2016 so it should definitely be released in 2017.

  10. I didn’t see Warbringer or Ne Obliviscaris on the list.
Along with Kreator and Sepultura they are the ones I’m most looking forward to in 2017.

  11. Some of those suggestions above are mine I know that, but I would also add…

    Abhorrent Decimation
    Ageless Oblivion
    Ancient Ascendant
    Dyscarnate

    Agrypnie
    Anomalie
    The Fall of Every Season
    In Vain
    Todtgelichter

    Alkaloid
    Alterbeast
    Emeth

    The Konsortium
    Maahlas
    Martriden
    Outre
    Wiegedood

    Life of Agony
    Solstafir
    A Swarm of the Sun

  12. Cnoc An Tursa – The Forty Five will be released early 2017

  13. you want that Phrenelith so bad you listed it twice! LOL! Must have the new Portal and Myrkur! Deathspell Omega should have something out too, it’s been forever!

  14. Afterbirth has some killer new stuff in the works, featuring Will from Artificial Brain on vocals, I’m expecting that before terribly long.

    • Well, it appears I ought to figure out more about Afterbirth. The band, I mean.

    • One other release for those who are interested in heavier, metal-inspired classical is the upcoming album from Seven)Suns, an NYC-based string quartet. They performed on the last Dillinger album. I’ve heard their new recordings and they sound awesome.

    • …and I’d personally love to hear something new from Akercocke, the track they released last year was good enough to get my hopes up despite their stumble (IMO) with “Antichrist”.

  15. Septicflesh and Shade Empire should have albums out too. Eagerly awaiting both.
Krimh has also announced another solo album (drummer for Septicflesh).
I would say Mechina, but it’s already out 😉 Nice how they keep up that clockwork approach.
And not metal, but looking forward to Anika Nilles first full album.

    • Damn, didn’t know about any of these. More excitement… and I guess I now need to learn about Anika Nilles….

      • Here’s a good place to start: https://youtu.be/Zae4Vo6Mx8I

Fun aside – I first learned of her when Mike Pitman, the drummer from Xerath, posted a link to one of her videos on his facebook page.

She has quite an individual drumming style, lots of quintuplets and is obviously not afraid to experiment. I think what she’s doing is great, you can tell from her fb page and fan engagement she’s really passionate and the kind of person that really deserves to go far. I can’t help but a bit torn about it all though, because at the same time I feel part of the reason for her following is that she’s a good-looking young female; if some other young woman in an alternate universe were playing the exact same music but were not as attractive, I think unfortunately that person wouldn’t have the same success or opportunity Anika’s getting. But obviously that doesn’t mean Anika is less deserving.

  16. I’m really excited for the new Six Feet Under album which will feature new guitarist, Ray Suhy. I think there’s a new Deicide on the way as well, another reason to break open the piggy bank. Throw in a new Cannibal Corpse and I’d call 2017 a triple win. 🙂

    • Your mention of Six Feet Under reminded me that I had failed to look around for 2017 releases announced by Metal Blade, and now I’ve done that and added them to the list (along with a few other additions).

  17. I am looking forward to: Dautha (ex Griftegard, on Van records), Procession (already mentioned above) and the new Phlebotomized !
For the rest I also hope for a new album from Faal.
Isn’t it time for a new album from: Voivod, Carcass, Om, Candlemass,…

  18. Is it too greedy to wish for new Sarpanitum after getting new Mithras this year? Probably, but that won’t stop me.
    Me

  19. I’m curious for the new Ulver record, that’ll be presented at Roadburn festival, ‘The Assassination Of Julius Caesar’. It’s probably not going to be a metal record, but I guess its still relevant for most readers here.

    • And records from two bands with ex-members of The Devil’s Blood, Dool (‘Here Now, Then There’ – Prophecy records, february 17) and Gold (‘Optimist’, Van records, february 24), both come out with new records. I’ve heard them and they are very good.

  20. A new full length Amiensus release would be welcome. Pretty excited for the new Tau Cross album.

  21. Im just so excited I don’t have to wait too long for the new Emptiness

  22. Primitive Man! I don’t mean to sound entitled but Agoraphobic Nosebleed owe us another EP or three

    • That sounds like a perfectly reasonable expectation to me. Surely we won’t have to threaten their families to get at least ONE more of those EPs. 🙂

  23. If Slagmaur don’t release Thill Smitts Terror soon, I’m gonna hunt them down and… give them the evil eye for, like, a very long time. Or something.

  24. I’d add Keldian (yes, it’s clean singing 😉 ) and Archivist.

  25. All Pigs Must Die definitely will have one in 2017!
The new Alunah comes out in the next couple months I think.
Also The Bronx just announced they will have a new one out this year.
Other than that I’m super stoked for:
    Toxic Holocaust
    The Drip
    Pallbearer
    Black Anvil
    Carcass?
    Monolith Deathcult
    Horrendous if we’re lucky

  26. The Ruins Of Beverast announced that an album should be released this year.

  27. Why do you have GOATMOON on the list? Do you support nazis?

  28. New Megiddo material of some kind is happening (confirmed on his Facebook)

Disma supposedly has a two song 12″ EP ready to go, probably through Profound Lore

    • Hell, didn’t know about either of those. Two exciting pieces of news.

      • Add in these confirmed for sure ones? …….

-Ulsect full length (Season Of Mist). Has two members from Dodecahedron + ex-Textures bassist.

-Archspire full length #3 confirmed for 2017. Band sent the masters in to Season Of Mist last month.

-Origin are recording a new album in February. Confirmed for Summer 2017. (Nuclear Blast)

*I’d also add the following on good authority based on what I’ve been told/heard:

-New Theory In Practice release (Confirmed and coming soon!)
-Sunless full-length (Confirmed and coming soon!)
        -New Pyrrhon full-length (Confirmed)
        -New Imperial Triumphant full-length (Confirmed)
-Coma Cluster Void – EP (Confirmed)
Enfold Darkness full length (Confirmed for 2017, finally…)
        -New Buckshot Facelift album (Confirmed)
        – Equipoise full length (Confirmed)
        -Concealment full length (Confirmed)
-Deeds Of Flesh full length (Confirmed)

  29. I totally forgot
Caladan Brood are working on new material.
Katla are working on their debut (check them out if you like Solstafir)
Broilers, a german ska/oi punk something band

  30. Cormorant =D

  31. Xanthochroid, The Ocean, Slagmaur, possibly God of Atheists !
