AN NCS PREMIERE: AU CHAMP DES MORTS — “DANS LA JOIE”

Last June the Debemur Morti label released a most impressive debut EP (Le Jour Se Lève) by the French band Au Champ Des Morts, which we had the pleasure of premiering. In those first songs, the band proved themselves to be powerful sonic spellcasters, with a talent for creating dynamic, richly textured music with a black metal core that hit with riveting emotional intensity. Debemur Morti is now following that EP with the release of the band’s debut album Dans La Joie later this month, and we have for you today a stream of its title track.

Au Champ Des Morts was founded in 2014 by guitarist/vocalist Stefan Bayle (Anorexia Nervosa) and he is joined on this album by bassist/vocalist Cecile G. and drummer Wilhelm. As you can see, the album also greatly benefits by the striking cover art of Dehn Sora.

The song “Dans La Joie” is emblematic of this band’s ability to weave immersive sonic spells with the capacity to pick up listeners and carry them away on a tide of emotional power.

Over the span of its ten-minute course, the music surges with driving strength, trailing fire and black smoke, propelled by piston-like percussion and a penetrating, emotionally affecting melody that’s dark as night — with a bleak aura that’s made even more desperate by the scalding intensity of the vocals.

But that is only one face of the song’s multifaceted shape. The surging inferno breaks briefly, and the music becomes crystalline and fragile, with the vocals turning clean and somber — before rising in wrenching anguish as the music’s intensity explodes again.

Dans La Joie will be released on January 27. The album was recorded at Drudenhaus Studio by Benoit Roux (Anorexia Nervosa, Alcest), mixed at Under The Sign Studio by Stefan Bayle, and mastered by Bruno Varea at Upload Studio.
