(We present another edition of Andy Synn’s three-line reviews.)

With Islander and associates currently knee-deep in the complexities and logistics of this weekend’s Northwest Terror Fest, it looks like it’s fallen to me to try and keep the lights on around here.

Honestly, the things I do for this place…

Anyway, to keep things ticking over, here’s a little something to highlight three bands who have, so far, slipped between the cracks of our usually comprehensive coverage (other than a couple of mentions in some round-ups), all of whom lean towards the darker, more atmospheric side of things.

COLDFELLSCOLDFELLS

Bleak, blackened, bracing

The perfect soundtrack to a

Dark night of the soul

PURE WRATHASCETIC EVENTIDE

Not so much wrathful

As it is reverential

Sombre and sublime

ROSKMIASMA

Sorrow, anguish, and

Rain without end. A black heart

Within a thin shell

  1. Brother Andy, you gotta up your poetry kung fu. Maybe something like:

    Rosk/Miasma

    Thick fuming anguish
    Joy for the hypersomic
    If noses were ears

Cause, miasma. Right? I’m a damn poet.

Anyway, thanks for the sweet picks! Great stuff.

    • Glad you liked them… but I’m definitely happy with the Rosk haiku… it says exactly what I wanted it to say…

    • Presenting the essence of an album though about a dozen words ain’t no exact science, but I feel that Andy nailed it pretty well. That said, I certainly hear “Thick fuming anguish” too, whence the music don’t take a more fragile route.
There’s some heartfelt emotional atmosphere on this one, something that admittedly can be said about each of these fine releases.

  2. That Coldfells record is fantastic, perhaps my favorite release of the year to date. Anything Aaron Carey is involved in is usually well worth checking out.

  3. Oh great, more boring blackgaze

  4. PURE WRATH – ASCETIC EVENTIDE

    Our logo is rad
    Also our artwork is rad
    Andy says good stuff

Fun article, great job as always.
