The Minnesota band kvsket (pronounced “casket”) describe themselves as “Minneapolis Goth Rock”. That’s the definition of a short-hand description. The “for fans of” references to Deftones, Gojira, My Chemical Romance, Turnstile, and The Cure is more descriptively complete but still doesn’t complete cover the waterfront of kvsket‘s head-spinning music on their album Patiently Awaiting Your Arrival, which was released last February. We tried to unpack it in May when we premiered a video for one of the album tracks (“Hot Grip”):

The 11 mostly short songs on Patiently Awaiting Your Arrival encompass a lot of musical variety…. You’ll find big burly bounding grooves, guitars that abrade like a belt-sander and glitter like needles or quiver like warped sirens, high-flying singing with a raw edge, dark gothic crooning, furious wailing yells, and nasty snarls.

Among those songs you’ll also find bleak bruisers, sinister and dissonant fretwork hallucinations, moments of forlorn poignancy, and other moments of post-punk-inspired bounce (but with raw edges and dark moods there too).

“Dance” includes a Pink Floydian solo, and “Rube Goldberg” gets you a bone-grinding bass and sax-like instrumental freakouts along with equally wild vocals that burst into screaming range, while “Date Night Kicks” is part steamroller, part pile-driver, and part lysergic acid spectacle, and closer “All This Talking” combines enormous lo-tone throbs, ruinously roiling riffage, drumming that sounds like avalanche boulders coming down, and choral voices.

And that, coincidentally, brings us to our premiere of kvsket‘s new video for that song “All This Talking“.

The video, filmed by Lana Mattson and Chaz Reynolds and edited by Michael Staver, is a hell of a thing to see, though the trippy special effects might have your eyeballs vibrating in their sockets before it ends. That’s after the beer and the guns, and the end of the beer.

The bass is the big brutish monster in the song, a pulsating head-mover, but the vivid rattle and snap of the drums moves heads too. Around those compulsive grooves you get channel-shifting guitar psychedelia, abrasively scraping chords, woozy wailing tones, and strident full-throated singing.

It’s the kind of musical menace that’s a viscerally potent muscle twitcher, but on the other hand it’s a head-scrambler too. Damned catchy on top of all that.
