AN NCS PREMIERE: BRAIN DEAD — “SPEED LASER PENETRATION”

Prepare to put your higher faculties on hold for a few minutes. That won’t require any conscious decision on your part after you press Play below, because the song we’re about to premiere will wake up your reptile brain and light a fire under it. It will then romp and run wild and body-check your thinking mind into the wall of your skull.

The Italian satanic speed metal band responsible for this song make no pretenses. Hell, they named themselves Brain Dead! As you’ll learn for yourselves when you listen to “Speed Laser Penetration,” the music is “stripped down” and feral, nothing fancy and nothing clean, as nasty as a wolverine pack with rabies. But it’s also damned compulsive – your reptile brain will thank you – and your thinking mind will probably appreciate the break too.

This barbaric trio must have had tongues in cheeks when they picked the name Brain Dead, because no dead brains could have written a song with this many rude kicks in it.

For sure, the sound is rude, with the kind of lo-fi garage-band production that gives the snare its simple, head-moving snap and the guitar a rusty cutting edge. The bass is a presence almost more felt than heard, and the screaming vocals create an abusively caustic assault (occasionally joined by raw punk yells brazenly crying out the song title) .

The riffing is essentially a two-part tandem, a sinister and slashing chord progression as rudimentary as punk, segmented with sudden bursts of fleet-fingered viciousness. The band also throw in a few bouts of blizzard-like abrasiveness, and, because this is a type of speed metal after all, the song discharges a delirious and electrifying guitar solo backed by berserk bass-work.
