In rapid succession two songs have recently surfaced from a new album by the Polish blackened tech-death band Impermanence, one of which we’re premiering today and the other of which is a “near premiere”. The name of the album is Anicca. It’s derived from Buddhist terminology and signifies impermanence – which is why, in a sense, the album can be considered self-titled. The band further explain:
The lyrical layer explores themes of transience and the search for purpose in the world around us. The album’s composition begins and ends with the ticking of a clock, clearly marking both the start and the conclusion of the story being told. Each track presents a different narrative, offering a unique perspective on the somber aspects of human nature. This concept extends beyond the lyrics, shaping the band’s overall artistic identity.
The song we’re premiering today is “Spiritual War“, and it’s a real jaw-dropper.

In some respects the song does sound like warfare, with drums booming like artillery and the guitars rapidly whizzing like bursts of bullets and sending fast flares to flash above them. Warlike roars and ravaged screams expel the words in the midst of the instrumental mayhem. The guitars also seem to scream — and to ecstatically swirl and dart, eye-popping in the dexterity of their performance.
The song is one of many facets, ever-changing, and so as the drums begin to rumble and tumble the notes ring out like beckoning chimes, leading us toward a sequence of fascinating guitar solos and then a finale of howling, fleet-fingered and fleet-limbed extravagance.
It’s really quite a breathtaking song, a technical death metal romp, but with twists and turns that aren’t common for the genre.
And now let’s turn to that second song we mentioned at the outset. Its name is “Sorrodise” and Impermanence released it with a video just a few days ago.
The video itself is a captivating experience, blending together footage of Impermanence performing in a nighttime setting backed by flames and smoke with a mysterious narrative of a blindfolded young woman in the desert — and a strange sequence of objects she encounters.
The song is every bit as thrilling as the one we’ve premiered, and even more so because we get to see the howling madman behind the mic and all the instrumental adventurers doing their intricate, mind-bending things. The soloing is again a standout feature of the song, this time fluidly weaving an Arabian spell, backed by thunderous jolts and screams of stunning duration.
IMPERMANENCE is:
Wojciech Wróbel – guitars
Paweł Hernik – guitars
Konrad Pieczara – drums
Bartłomiej Fitas – bass
Mateusz Bednarz – vocals
