Earlier today my friend and NCS comrade DGR made an observation about certain kinds of brutal death metal that coincidentally turns out to be quite relevant to the song from Australia’s Caution that we’re about to premiere.

In the context of reviewing an album by New York’s Thaetas, he pointed to “a weirdly ardent vein of avant-garde approach in many brutal death and yes, even slam bands,” music that turns out to be “very intricate for the sort of caveman facade it puts on,” with compositions that can spin themselves into a whirlwind — “balls of vitriol that shift constantly in mercurial form.”

Those observations seem germane to the Caution song “Eradication From the Taint” that you’re about to take in. That’s not to suggest that Caution and Thaetas are cut from the same cloth, but “Eradication From the Taint” does display a kind of musical wildness that contrasts with the primitive and utterly bludgeoning thuggishness it also inflicts.

The wildness comes first. Without giving listeners time for even a quick breath, Caution maniacally discharge hyper-speed drumming and seizure-like riffing with a sandblasting abrasiveness — and then drop a depth-charge detonation as they shift gears into a more brutally hulking form, while strafing the brutality with crazed string tortures and monstrous gutturals.

They continue switching things up, letting loose bursts of percussive mayhem, opening veins of grim, moaning melody, inflicting murderously agitated pile-driver grooves, and convulsing in berserk fretwork spasms.

But before this relatively brief song ends, Caution bring out their caveman persona too, with a stomping breakdown that makes good use of their humongous bass tones. They accent the rock-crushing stomps with braying and squiggling guitars, shift the tempos in off-kilter fashion, and administer a dose of double-bass hammering for good measure.

And now we should give you some background about these young Aussies. They are Sydney-based, and we’re told that before releasing music they’ve been cutting their teeth on stages around Australia and even in Japan, practicing their traumatic craft while fueling mosh pits.

They attracted the attention of Vicious Instinct Records, which is officially releasing the song you’ve just heard on October 7th. The label states:

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Caution are a death metal band delivering relentless aggression, crushing riffs, and chaotic live energy.

I don’t think we have ever signed a band straight from demo recordings but this band rips, and we are very proud to unveil the debut single from Caution!

Blending the brutality of death metal with the raw violence of hardcore, the band consists of close mates who share a unified vision to create the heavy music they want to hear. That’s what it’s all about, thanks for checking it out!

Vicious Instinct also reports that Caution are currently working on their debut EP, scheduled for release in 2027, with this new single serving as the first taste of what is to come.

CAUTION is:
Anatoly Rudolph – Vocals
Jackson Zaraza – Guitar
Henry Cummins – Guitar
Keone Butcher – Bass
Matt Vieyra – Drums
