Last year Transcending Obscurity Records released the second album created by the Floridian death metal band Haxprocess, Beyond What Eyes Can See. In advance of its release we wrote: “The album is enormously and exuberantly creative, and an enormously ambitious undertaking, and we can understand why T.O. labels it ‘epic’, not merely because the songs are long but because the band’s achievements are so incandescent.” And in a subsequent review our Andy Synn acclaimed it as ” one of the major highlights of the year in Death Metal (and beyond).”
So you can understand why we (and no doubt many other listeners) were excited to learn that Haxprocess would be quickly returning this year with yet another album, again to be released by Transcending Obscurity. The name of this new one, which is scheduled to drop on December 4th, is Endlessly Flowing Cascades of Grief, and as we did for the band’s last album we’re premiering one of its five new songs today.

Yes, five new songs instead of four, which was the number of tracks on last year’s album. Each of those preceding four was long, and this time most of the new songs are more compact. On the other hand, the final track on the new album (“A Cascade of Grief“) tips the scales at more than 21 minutes — completing a total runtime of nearly 42 minutes for Endlessly Flowing Cascades of Grief.
Today’s premiere is one of the relatively shorter songs, “Condemnation of Eternal Misery“, but this being Haxprocess, they fill it with head-spinning experiences.
in just the song’s first 20 seconds it both ethereally and mysteriously rings and then creates a viciously jolting and maniacally swirling outburst, and just as quickly it reminds us of both the electrifying talents of drummer Adam Robinson and the monstrosity of Lothar Mallea’s gutturals.
The clear-toned guitars fly at high speed — searing and scissoring, screeching and writhing, mercurially whirling and slithering — accompanied by bass notes that are equally fast and nimble. The effect is spectacularly kaleidoscopic, presenting a wild (and wildly ecstatic) formulation of progressive death metal but without sacrificing savagery.
Yet to be clear, as mind-boggling as this adventure is, Haxprocess thread it with recurring motifs that become hooks, which is a further sign that the band are capable songwriters as well as an instrumental high-wire act, and the song is also home to a fantastic extended guitar solo, a real mind-bender.
Speaking of recurring motifs, the band do eventually settle down and remind us of the way the song opened, and in doing so they create a haunting spell, one made even more haunting by the subdued singing that emerges. At last, we understand the name that Haxprocess gave the song.
This really is a fantastic and highly distinctive band, and they’re delivering another fantastic album.
