If you’re wondering about that thundering black mass of a storm on the horizon, the one with the boiling fires of Hades at its center and crackling tendrils of lightning that spear the earth in a fury, it’s not a natural phenomenon. It’s the approach of a new album by Behexen.
The fifth full-length by these infamous Finnish demons fittingly bears the name The Poisonous Path, and it will descend upon us on May 27 via Debemur Morti Productions. In this post we bring the premiere of its first advance track, “Chalice of the Abyssal Water“.
Four years after Nightside Emanations and almost 20 years after their first demo, Behexen show no signs of repentance or fatigue, but instead a dedication to further perfecting their hellish black art.
This new Behexen song is a manifestation of fire and death. In part, it’s a warlike torrent of sound, with bullet-spitting drums, deep, booming bass rhythms, and barbarous riffs, the music hurtling forward like the attacking descent of a great horned serpent. It’s the heavy sound of barely controlled chaos, laced with filaments of high, vibrating guitar melody.
But as the pace slows, the song also transforms, metamorphosing into a luciferian devotional, its slow, heaving chords a stately offering, its bleak dissonant melody generating poisonous emanations, Hoath Torog’s bestial, gravel-throated voice declaiming incantations from the pit. This is a Behexen song that’s both electrifying and atmospheric, fierce and steeped in an ominous gloom.
The Poisonous Path was recorded by Samu Oittinen at Fantom Studios, with assistant engineering by Ville Puurtinen. It was mixed and mastered by Tore Stjerna at Necromorbus Studio. The artwork was created by Kristiina Lehto. Here is the track list:

Exciting! I haven’t listened nearly enough to this band’s elder stuff. I wasn’t too pleased about Nightside Emanations, but this sounds much better. Looking forward to The Poisonous Path.
I love the first paragraph in this post, and the rest of the walk-through is also nifty.
Thank you sir! From a wordsmith such as yourself, I’m especially grateful for the compliment.
Good description of the song, as usual, with your words you have reached the core of this sinister and beautiful new song by the Black Metal force in Behexen. I’m eager to hear more and to read your review of course.
Thank you — and good to see your name again here.
Definitely a band I need to explore further.
I’m liking the production on this track, and the vocals are truly monstrous 😀 Will be waiting impatiently for May to roll around 😛
Great description,I’m hopeless with words myself so I’ll just say I’m looking forward to this, solid band.
See in Metal Archives the Sargeist band line up and had got an heart attack. Only Shatraug and (I think) the guy that had play with you as guitarist during the last live session. Apart that Metal Archives is like the wikipedia of metal, but anyway I get a look immediately to the Behexen page (this happens a month ago) and se all you in.
So, since one month i’m telling to all mt old school friend to expect in some weeks a surprise from BEHEXEN (without have the fucking idea of what you where burning in tour bloddy cauldron: anyway see the BEHEXEN lineup so perfectly complete and in attack position, hear in the air “new album is coming”, see Sargeist still with a page “in pause” my evil feel was that I will not going to lie or going do get delusion to anyone telling that 1 month of patient and something very raw, crude, and black with the touch of Shatraug riffing, that in the last 2 album was more curated for the Sargeist albums this year will going not to disappeared, but in a different direction because this is the BEHEXEN YEAR.
And I have to say you that from when you put on a “taste” from this blasphemic eucharist cannibal meal i get almost every hour pvt to have info dior the official release date (27 May) because i get faith to my evil feeling, and as ever he back me the right feetback. Question of a couple of week where, as Shatraug done with the last Sargeist work I hope that get us the honor to hear in stream the song of this album where there is his favorite and sick guitar riff.
