On July 5th Transcending Obscurity Records will release the second album by the Spanish death/doom band Hex, the defiant title of which is God Has No Name, and today we present the premiere of the album’s second advance track, “All Those Lies That Dwells…”
As you’ll discover from the song we’re bringing you today, as well as from the previously released opening song on the album (“Thy Kingdom Gone“), the musical approach of Hex is different from many bands who have been branded with the death/doom label. Rather than craggy, lumbering, and crushing, the music of Hex tends to be more animated, more exotic, and more surprising. This new song, for example, is downright ferocious, though the gloom of doom does rear its head, albeit in unexpected ways.
For most of its duration, “All Those Lies That Dwells…” is a fast-paced neck-wrecker, packed with jittery and jabbing riffs and squirming leads, propelled by hammering, battering drumwork, and magnified in its savagery by the vocalist’s vicious growls, howls, and roars. Alternating with stomping rhythms and dismal, groaning chords, the song presents a dynamic experience, which becomes even more variable as a gloomy and ominous variation on the principle melody surfaces in the midst of the racing barbarism. But the most dramatic change arrives in the track’s back half, when a melodic lead creates an even more wretched feeling — just before the drums disappear altogether and a more ambient style of melody washes over distant crashing and droning tones, deepening the mood of desolation and creating an uneasy yet hypnotic finale.
Transcending Obscurity will release God Has No Name in a variety of formats, and it’s available for pre-order now. In addition to our own premiere, we’re including a stream of the album’s previously released opening track, “Thy Kingdom Gone”, in which the band’s doom influences and taste for exotic melody are more prominently displayed.
