The Italian artist Selvans probably needs no introduction to those who regularly visit our site, but for those encountering Selvans for the first time today, we’ll share a few words from Selvans‘ label Avantgarde Music:
The singer and keyboardist Selvans, plays black/heavy metal with prog-rock influences. Lyrics and concept are inspired by Italian folk-horror tales and imagery. After two full length albums, Lupercalia (2016, Avantgarde Music) and Faunalia (2018, Avantgarde Music) in 2021 he released The Dark Italian Art EP, an artistic manifesto that sees the team-up with the horror writer Luigi Musolino.
We can also share that Selvans will be following The Dark Italian Art with a new album. Though a release date hasn’t yet been announced, we’ve all been given a preview of what it will bring through Selvans‘ recent release of a single named “Il Capro Infuocato“. To help spread the word further, today we’re presenting a lyric video for the song.
By way of introduction, we’ll again share the description provided by Avantgarde Music and Selvans:
Come to the Sabbath! Selvans takes us into the midst of an orgiastic ritual in the woods to summon the ‘Flaming Goat’ (Capro Infuocato). Between writhing bodies and gigantic statues made of straw and roots, the Italian horrorist brings to life a black metal anthem in Italian and for the first time entirely sung with clean vocals, with a strong prog-heavy metal vibe in the way of Savatage and a sabba central part with transverse flute, synth and hammond.
As you’ll see, the video makes good use of the stunning cover art for the single, in addition to providing an English translation of the lyrics as subtitles for non-Italian speakers. Selvans explains:
“Sheila Franco is objectively the best Italian new comer for metal artworks but there is something telepathic in how she has been able to capture the scene for the artwork of ‘Il Capro Infuocato‘ exactly how it came to my mind!
Her art could not be relegated to a simple cover so… I decide to give it life in this lyric video of the track!
As for the music, “Il Capro Infuocato” is a truly eye-popping and head-spinning piece of musical theater — elaborate, ever-changing, and full of surprises. It brings black metal to center-stage with writhing and whirring chords, fire-bright flickering arpeggios, and ferociously hammering drums, capturing the orgiastic delirium of the tale.
But it also introduces gloriously soaring keys that sometimes sound like a heroic choir, brazenly throbbing heavy metal riffage, and pounding grooves, as well as frantically darting drums, organ notes redolent of gothic horror, and twittering electronics.
As previewed above, the song also segues into a fascinating instrumental segment in which a transverse flute frolics in the lead — a devilish and witchy episode that enhances the song’s supernatural aura. And there’s a terrific guitar solo near the end that pitches the song to even greater heights of black magic and infernal glory.
As for the vocals, which are a key feature of the spectacle, there is indeed clean singing, but it’s gritty and inflamed in its intensity, and you’ll also hear wild screams, soaring cries, vicious snarls, gutty grunts, and diabolical chants.
The video editing was done by Andreace Studio, and Carola Ragone provided the translation for the subtitles.
For this song Selvans performed vocals and keys and was aided by these talented musicians:
Christian D’Onofrio: guitars
Agares: bass
Marco Berrettoni: drums
Antonio Scelzi: guitar solo
Roberto De Grandis: transverse flute
The song was recorded at various studios around Italy, and it was mixed and master at The Forge Music Productions in Stockholm by Marco S. Vermiglio. It’s available for download and streaming via the links below.
