Today we’re facilitating an event that’s the sonic equivalent of detonating a dirty bomb in a crowded downtown thoroughfare. But instead of radioactive material, this bomb is packed with nails, viscera, and bone fragments, all expanding at the pace of a blast front.
What we’re presenting is the first song to be violently discharged from Morbid Ataraxia, a no-holds-barred new album by the Italian brutal death metal band Putridity in advance of its June 27 release by Willowtip Records. As you can see, we’re also revealing the album’s ghastly cover painting, prepared by the fiendishly talented Paolo Girardi.
The album’s name might seem peculiar, given the ruthlessly assaulting nature of Putridity‘s music, because “ataraxia” refers to a state of serene calmness. Putridity explain that they chose it because the album’s overarching theme addresses “the oxymoronic nature of humanity.”
Perhaps in time the band will further flesh out this conception, but for now it’s time for them to de-flesh listeners with the song we’re presenting today, “Mors Mater Nostra” (Latin for “Death of Our Mother”).
There is not one sane thing about this song. It is entirely berserk, as well as malignant, murderous, and marauding. As previously noted, it moves at the pace of a blast front. It’s stunningly fast and seemingly out-of-control, yet it’s the kind of rampant chaos that requires eye-popping technical skill to execute.
The song detonates immediately, no fuse burning down and no warning. The drumming is blistering, but comes in bursts and with variations that are almost too quick to comprehend. The guitars are tuned to gutting and mangling tones and the riffing maniacally veers and convulses as it eviscerates, punctured by swift screeches, grisly swarming frenzies, machine-like stitching, sudden stops, and sudden starts.
As for the vocals, they are utterly foul, the kind of macabre grunting and gurgling gutturals that make one imagine a furious crocodile or bear being strangled while attempting to digest a fresh kill.
There really aren’t many death metal bands, brutal or not, who could pull off this kind of violent insanity. It’s breathtaking to behold, pure adrenaline fuel, the kind of serenity that perhaps a serial killer might psychotically experience while in a lethal fugue, but otherwise the antonym for ataraxia.
