Last fall the Gothenburg-based black metal band Lömsk made a tremendous first impression with their debut EP, Act I. Those four songs were dark and devastating, often towering in their scale and sweeping in their expansiveness. In Lömsk‘s renditions of war-zone chaos the music was fiery and harrowing, but their powerful melodies also channeled sensations of tragedy and despair with staggering intensity. (We had more to say about Act I here.)
Vendetta Records released Act I on CD and 12″ vinyl editions, and (not surprisingly) those sold out in just a few days after release. Reacting to demand, Vendetta ordered represses of those editions and they are now being made available. And, as a fresh reminder of Lömsk‘s daunting and exhilarating power, they are releasing a new single.
This new song, “Furia“, will be released on streaming platforms on May 30th, but we’re privileged to provide an exclusive premiere of the song today.
“Furia” seizes attention immediately and dramatically. The layered instrumentation sizzles, quivers, and glitters with sparks. Ragged, wailing tones rise and subside with striking effect, like a siren of agony. Beneath all that, immense low-frequency tones slowly groan and pound with visceral force. The impact of this near-cinematic overture would be hypnotic if it weren’t so grief-stricken in its mood.
But the song is named “Furia” for a reason, and it does become furious — though it doesn’t cast aside the feeling of affliction already created. The immense rhythm section titanically hammers; the flickering and swirling guitars reach a shrill fever pitch, but the music also dismally moans; a voice snarls with jagged edges and the explosiveness of rage. The music is panoramic in its sweep, rolling and roiling in glittering and galvanizing waves.
The bass is relentlessly heavy, and the drums relentlessly powerful, but they create less riotous variations beneath the extravagant spectacles that elaborately flash and flow in the music’s stratosphere. The raking and clawing vocals channel the fury, lacerating in their passion.
“Furia” thus proves to be muscle-moving, engulfing, captivating, intensely moving on an emotional level, and altogether memorable.
The new vinyl and CD editions of Act I are available for order through the Vendetta and Lömsk links below, and “Furia” will be available on Bandcamp, Spotify, and elsewhere on May 30th.
