There are so many ways humanity could extinguish its own existence or render it vastly more miserable. No doubt you can count the ways as easily as we can. Death creeps toward us all, and sometimes races at us out of control. But if we don’t make it to the end of this year (place your bets!), at least the French death metal band Creeping Fear have provided us both a new soundtrack for the wretched end times, and a parting gift.
Their new album, Realm of the Impaled, will be released by Dolorem Records on June 27th — surely we will last that long! (place your bets…) It again features eye-impaling cover art by the great Paolo Girardi and again confronts us with the ghastly visage of the hellish horned creature (armored this time) that presided over their last album, 2021’s Hategod Triumph.
As for the music, it’s hellish too. Here’s how Dolorem sums it up: “Creeping Fear is the burning breath of the apocalypse in death metal: brutal, technical, and uncompromising. Devastating riffs, abysmal growls, and suffocating atmospheres—something between Immolation and Hate Eternal, prepare to dive into a masterful sonic chaos.”
As a test of these claims we’re presenting a lyric video today for one of the new album tracks, a song very appropriately named “Feast of Violence“.
The song’s imperious and fiendish opening riffage matches up very well with the infernal beast on the new album’s cover art. As it wails, jolts, and shivers the riffing is brazen and cruel, backed by gut-loosening bass tones and drum blows that sound like they’re trying to fracture the listener’s neck bones.
The jagged, howling, and gruesomely gurgling vocals are also monstrous and imperious, and their mad braying of the song title authentically seems to relish the feast of violence that’s coming. And it does come:
The guitars squeal and maniacally convulse, viciously swarming while the drums batter and scamper, and they also rapidly writhe in manifestations of eviscerating ecstasy. The mad fret-burning guitar solo which soon follows is even more insanely jubilant.
On top of all that, the song also slows and alters in a way that seems to capture the moaning agony and choking hopelessness of the monstrous protagonist’s victims, while the vocals simultaneously escalate into insane screams.
You’ll also discover this: While the song is hellish in many ways — imperiously cruel, frighteningly infernal, violently chaotic, and a gruesome trough of misery — it’s also damned infectious.
CREEPING FEAR is:
Clément Ducouret (Guitars and Vocals)
Gabriel Hammel (Guitars)
Matthias Biechler (Bass)
Hector Hellgz (Drums)
Realm of the Impaled was recorded at Hybreed Studio by Andrew Guillotin and at Henosis Studio by Frédéric Gervais. It was mixed at Henosis Studio and mastered by the great Dan Swanö at Unisound Studio.
Dolorem will release the album on LP vinyl and on CD with a 12-page booklet that includes all the lyrics. They recommend it for fans of Hate Eternal, Immolation, and Cannibal Corpse.
Pre-orders are available at Bandcamp, where you can also listen to two other previously released songs from the album, “Torture Wheel” and “Et Ils se Couvrirent de Gloire“.
