The Spanish band SolNegre first seized our attention here through their release in 2024 of a single song named Annihilation of the Self, which extended for more than 21 minutes. Our reviewer called it “a veritable odyssey of expressive, expansive, atmosphere-heavy Death Doom rich in both metallic weight and melodic depth”, “at times mournfully minimalist and melancholy, at others morbidly heavy (and not afraid to crank up the Death Metal influences)”.
SolNegre followed that last April with their second album, Anthems of the Grand Collapse, and that seized our attention too. Our review praised it as “[e]asily one of the best Doom (or Doom-related) albums of the year, possessing a scintillating sense of grandeur and a vivid artistic vision thoroughly befitting the similarly epic and evocative artwork that adorns its cover” — “a heavy album – both musically and emotionally – [but] also an album of surprising variety”.
However, along with bringing the triumph of that album, 2026 has proven to be a year of heartbreaking tragedy for SolNegre, an unexpected tragedy that occurred just before the live recording of the song and video we’re bringing you today.
SolNegre have told us that they “have always struggled with their role in the wider music world, constantly examining the question ‘why do we do this?'”
We never conceived the songs as performances but rather like private experiences intended to be enjoyed without witnesses.”
However, in the wake of Anthems For The Grand Collapse success, seeing the manner in which people took SolNegre’s music to their hearts, the band began to wonder if there might be a way in which to share the intimacy of their performance… and these ponderings lead to ‘In The Stillness Of The Womb – The Solis Extinctio Sessions / Live From Diorama Sound‘.
The plan was simply to capture an in studio live performance, but in the end the session took on far greater meaning….
This session was recorded beneath the shadow of a solar eclipse, during a time that quietly reminded us how fleeting and eternal every shared moment truly is. What had been planned simply as a live performance unexpectedly became something else. The day before entering the studio, we lost our friend and violin player, Núria. We considered postponing the recording. Instead, we chose to continue.
Before the cameras began to roll, we gathered in silence. I felt compelled to say a few words, simply to remind ourselves why we were there, and why we should carry on
despite the weight we all felt. We never planned for those words to become part of the session. Yet leaving them out no longer felt honest.What follows is a document of a single morning of shared therapy, captured beneath the shadow of an eclipse, when grief, gratitude and music briefly became the same thing. This is why we do this.

Núria Luis (1979 – 2026)
It feels like that should suffice for an introduction to the following recording and video, the subject of which is one of the songs from SolNegre’s album Anthems for the Grand Collapse. But we’ll add that the song is beautiful and soul-stirring, mystical and mesmerizing, and very much like a longing remembrance. The vocal performance by Gadea es Ineseta is a key to how moving it is. As she and the musicians soar near the end, it will put your heart in your throat. It feels special to be invited into this room to witness the performance. And we’ll add these further words on behalf of the band:
It is at this moment, when the light withdraws and the world holds its breath, that we choose to share this live session with you.
As the veil between worlds grows thin, we become part of this ceremony of light and shadow, an ephemeral fragment of Eternity to remind us of how fragile and impermanent all things truly are.
Our first gathering, a testament to presence, to absence, and to those whose light continues to shape our path long after it has vanished from our sight.

The audio version of “In The Stillness Of The Womb – The Solis Extinctio Sessions / Live From Diorama Sound” will be available through streaming sites on August 12th, the date of a major solar eclipse.
