AN NCS VIDEO PREMIERE: ADVERSOR — “SHATTERED VISIONS”

“[M]erging the ferocious thrash attack of prime Kreator with the soaring melodies of Nevermore and Vektor.” That’s a very quick introduction to the sound of the Italian band Adversor and their forthcoming fourth album This Mortal Coil, which is set for release on November 6th by Selvajaria Records.

But we have a more direct representation of Adversor’s new music for you today through our premiere of a song off the new album called “Shattered Visions“, and a pulse-racing video to go along with it.

For newcomers to Adversor, they were founded in late 2015 by brothers Dado and Ja. In the band’s current lineup the former is the vocalist and rhythm guitarist, and the latter is the drummer. The lineup is completed by bassist Ale and lead guitarist Phil. They all have their chance to shine in the song and video we’re presenting.

But to put the song in the proper context we want to share an excerpt from materials we’ve received about the new album:

Social commentary has always been central to Adversor, and This Mortal Coil pushes it further. The album tackles the frustration of a generation facing increasingly impossible living conditions, society’s fading memory of its darkest past, authoritarianism, genocide and violence against women, with “Burn” dedicated to Giulia Cecchettin.

Other songs on the album also focus more personal themes, and one of them (“Gargantua”) ventures into cosmic territory, having been inspired by Interstellar and Event Horizon. All the themes converge in the album’s cover art by Misanthropic-Art — “a small, anonymous figure staring into the void, reflecting the uncertainty and isolation running throughout the record”.

Focusing specifically on “Shattered Visions“, we have this comment from Adversor:

“‘Shattered Visions‘ represents very well how difficult our current global reality is.
The song is an invitation to reflect before it’s too late and remember what the past should’ve taught us. This is the first time we wrote a song with this kind of style, hopefully metalheads will understand our message.”

The song itself is a multi-faceted experience. It will rev your engines, sandblast your flesh, and give you cause to hammer your head like a piston. It’s exhilarating and furious, but also at times bleak and beleaguered. And it’s likely to get stuck in listeners’ heads very quickly.

The revving of engines happens immediately, with drums vigorously jumping, the bass urgently throbbing, and the riffage slashing and roiling. The music is feral and angry, and the guitar tones are covered with enough grit to take care of the sandblasting. The snarling and screaming vocals are gritty as well, and their fiery intensity leaves no room for complacency.

The riffing also includes tremolo-picked swarms and grim, raking chords that together create bleak and even desperate moods. And then Adversor pause the rhythm section and let loose a feverishly pulsating riff as a bridge. You’ll know what’s coming on the other side, but it’s still irresistible — a chance to work your neck and bang your head.

And on the other side of that the band’s lead guitarist executes a guitar solo that is itself a multi-faceted affair — part trippy, part bluesy, part heavy metal anthem. It dismally squalls and wails; it slithers and soars; it turns into a rapidly swirling fireworks display; and it leaves enough time for the band to put the pedal to the metal one more time, and to reprise their musical expressions of fury and the pain.

As mentioned way up above, Adversor present the track through a very good video of themselves performing the song, and it shows how well they can command a stage, through the experience they’ve gained touring extensively across Europe and the UK.
