(Today we present Comrade Aleks‘ interview of Lord Ashler, bassist of the multi-national black metal band Gjallarhorn’s Wrath, whose debut album The Silver Key is out now on Non Serviam Records.)

There was no way to pass by a release with obvious references to Lovecraftian mythology. The Silver Key may not be his coolest story, but as an important part of the Dream Cycle, it remains a landmark in his bibliography. Gjallarhorn’s Wrath is a young international black metal project that has nothing to do with Norse mythology, according to which Gjallarhorn was the golden horn of Heimdall, the guardian of the gods. The sound of this horn is supposed to herald the coming of Ragnarök, but I didn’t encounter anything of the sort in the project’s first album.

Formally, the members of Gjallarhorn’s Wrath live in four different countries, but in reality, the guitarist, bassist, and drummer hail from Spain, where they once played black metal all together. Only vocalist Alex Caron is originally from Canada.

The guys describe their black metal as “symphonic,” and such qualifications always make me wary, but Gjallarhorn’s Wrath successfully avoid all the traps of the unbridled carnival madness that some “symphonized” bands tend to indulge in. Orchestrations are present, they are tasteful, but, as a rule, they fade into the background compared to the guitar, which is naturally the main driving force of the songs, and, despite some theatricality, the project easily switches to the mode of destructive manifestations and, more rarely, reaches the level of infernal cacophony.

We interviewed Gjallarhorn’s Wrath’s bass-player Lord Ashler recently, and you can find it below easily. Continue reading »

The Barcelona-based extreme metal band Gjallarhorn’s Wrath trace their roots to the Spanish atmospheric black metal band Oblivion, which was founded in 2001. After making a strong mark, that earlier group disbanded, but in time the core members reunited. With the addition of vocalist Alex, Lord Ashler moved to bass, Javi Iron returned to handle drums, keys, and composition, and Arash continued as lead guitarist.

Under the name Gjallarhorn’s Wrath, they have recorded a debut album entitled The Silver Key that’s set for release by Non Serviam Records on September 5th. As the label explains, the album blends “the raw aggression of blackened death metal with the grandeur of orchestral and cinematic elements”.

Last month we hosted the premiere of a transfixing video for a sonic spectacle from The Silver Key named “Wiccan Wyrd“, and today we follow that with another riveting video. This one presents the album’s second single, “A Silent Scream“. Continue reading »

On September 5th of this year Non Serviam Records will release The Silver Key, the debut album from the Spanish band Gjallarhorn’s Wrath. It’s a new name, but the group has older roots. Non Serviam provides this background:

Gjallarhorn’s Wrath is an extreme metal band from Barcelona, born from the legacy of Oblivion, an atmospheric black metal act founded in 2001. Oblivion made a strong impact on the Spanish metal scene with their deep exploration of light and darkness. They performed across Spain and toured with Norwegian legends Ancient. Over time, the band members went their separate ways, and the group disbanded. However, the spirit of their music endured.

Years later, the core members reunited with a shared vision to create something even more ambitious. With the addition of vocalist Alex, Lord Ashler moved to bass, Javi Iron returned to handle drums, keys, and composition, and Arash continued as lead guitarist. Together, they formed Gjallarhorn’s Wrath, blending the raw aggression of blackened death metal with the grandeur of orchestral and cinematic elements.

What we’re presenting today is a transfixing video for a sonic spectacle from The Silver Key named “Wiccan Wyrd“, a song that justifies Non Serviam‘s description of this band’s new music. Continue reading »
