(Find out why the new album from Zmarłym is one of Andy Synn‘s favourites of the year so far)

I may catch a little bit of flack for this… but… from my perspective the first third (since we’re almost a third of the way through the year now) of 2025 has been kind of slow, musically speaking.

I’m not saying it’s been a bad year, by any means, and if it’s been working for you then that’s not a bad thing either, but for me 2025 so far feels like a bit of a step down from 2024 (and 2023, and so on), with a lot of the “big” names or highly hyped new releases just coming across as “ok”.

That being said, there have definitely been a few notable stand-outs (some of which I’ve been able to write about and review here), and a lot more potential highlights to look forward to, so I wouldn’t exactly say we should be ready to write off the whole year just yet.

Zmarłym

You could call this installment of the list a “Shades of Black” segment. Each band plays black metal, but the styles are quite distinct from each other. All three of these songs got stuck in my head the first time I heard them, and I still enjoy re-living the experiences many months later.

The grouping is book-ended by two Polish bands, with an Italian solo project in the middle, and I hope the songs I’ve chosen will induce you to explore the full releases they came from because all three are worth the time.

If you happen to be cruising into this list for the first time, you’ll find the preceding Parts (and an explanation of what this list is all about) through THIS LINK. Continue reading »

I write a lot of premieres, indeed one or more every damned day. I have many reasons for doing that, but one of them is the opportunity it affords to discover something I might otherwise miss, something out of the ordinary and invigorating, and that’s exactly what happened when we were invited to host a full stream of Zmarłym‘s debut album Druga Fala in advance of its November 21 release by Godz Ov War Productions. It struck me like a bolt from the blue, immediately captivating and head-spinning from the first listen.

The album title is Polish for “Second Wave”, and it does indeed mark this trio’s second release, following a 2020 EP, Ziemie jałowe. The fact that it’s only the band’s second effort makes it all the more remarkable. It provides a rich cornucopia of surprises, a truly adventurous black metal album that pulled this the listener in and didn’t let go. It has quickly become a 2021 favorite of mine. Continue reading »
