Well, holy shit. I’m nearly speechless. Here we have an awards event that I’ve been making fun of as long as this blog has been in existence — the REVOLVER GOLDEN GODS AWARD (sub-titled “Fellating the Old Gods Since 2009”) — and this year they actually nominate a band for best album who I actually care about.

Seriously, I had just about decided that these awards weren’t even worth making fun of this year, so irrelevant have they become to the kind of metal that matters to me and most of this site’s readers. And then they go and nominate Gojira and L’Enfant Sauvage for Album of the Year. And that’s not all: Mario Duplantier is nominated for Best Drummer.

There are a few other nominations that involve bands I like — both Ghost and Kvelertak are nominated for Best New Talent; Dethklok picked up nominations for Best Guitarist (Brendon Small), Best Drummer (Gene Hoglan ), and Song of the Year (“I Ejaculate Fire”); Refused is nominated for Comeback of the Year, and Deftones got some nods too (including Album of the Year).

But, to no one’s surprise, the bright spots are greatly outnumbered by the “who gives a shit?” nominations. You can see all of them below.

But first, I just want to say this about the Gojira and Mario Duplantier nominations: This sure seems to me like cause for a stuffing-the-ballot-box campaign by metalheads. I mean, how cool would it be if Gojira stole Album of the Year at this thing and Mario Duplantier won Best Drummer?

  1. Nice to see that Revolver turned down the suck for this year’s list, but as you’ve alluded to, a few of these categories still aren’t really necessary. Still, nice to see some names worthy of recognition; not everyone may care for Revolver (the only issue I bothered with was their Pantera tribute, which I thought was surprisingly well done) or the awards, but there are enough that do – and if a band like Gojira gets the win, that may get some more people to check them out, or some of the others that might not usually get noticed (Dethklok, Periphery).

    • Nominating Gojira seems like a calculated move to tap into a segment of fans who otherwise wouldn’t give these awards 2 seconds of thought. So in a way, I feel like I’m playing right into their hand. But even though I feel like I’m being played, I’m playing anyway!

  2. The best bassist category should have just been called “the only bassists we know by name here at Revolver” category. Lemmy and Jason Newsted didn’t even have albums released in 2012.

  3. In all honesty, when I saw the parenthetical, I thought it would be Blut aus Nord.

  4. Man, that is a dismal collection of lists.

  5. You can’t argue with Kvelertak being up for best new talent. Love that band. Amazing album and fantastic live!

    • I do think it’s cool that they were nominated, along with Ghost. Would also be cool if these bands also got to play live at the awards show. That would open some eyes.

  6. One year we’ll be able to make a stand and not talk about these.

  7. uhm it;s nice to see Gojira in the nominations and I hope they win!!!! plus Geddy Lee should win. Now regarding the category of MOST DEDICATED FANS I just had to LOL

    • No shit. In my fantasy world they would include a fan voting option in each category called None of the Above, which would then win in almost every category.

    • BLS should have to win that. I’m a casual BLS fan, but I’m surrounded by several die-hard Burzerkers who’ve been that way for a long time.

  8. Comeback of the Year- Tenacious D.

I mean, Kyle had to break out of an insane asylum to reunite. Val Kilmer died to reunite the D. It would be a traveshamockery if they didn’t win.

  9. This still seems like the same lame ass trendy crap they do year in year out. Gojira is great, but that album got alot of love, so no surprise it received a nomination. Doesn’t make them any less trendy hispters.
