Today marks the first appearance at our humble site of the Finnish black metal band Hail Conjurer, but a glance at the band’s discography reveals that we are very, very late in paying attention.

Beginning in 2017 Hail Conjurer has released numerous demos, splits, and EPs, as well as six full-length albums. The word “prolific” is well-earned here, and the volume of creative output is even more impressive considering that during those years the person behind the project has also been a participant in Hooded Menace, Horse Latitudes, and Ride for Revenge (among others).

As large as it is, the discography of Hail Conjurer is about to swell again, because on May 18th (Ascension Day in the christian church) the band will release a new full-length named Ouroboros Lust on the Bestial Burst label, and that album is the source of the hellish music we’re premiering today through an official video.

The new album is described in these words:

“On the seventh full length offering, Hail Conjurer sheds his skin for an album dense with heat and lust. Divided in six chapters of demonic tales and erotic devotion, ranging from noisy interludes to bursting metal and melancholic doom, Ouroboros Lust invites a listener on a journey from the Paradise in flames onto the mountain of Flesh. Unfold the mysteries and enter the scarlet gates…”

Of those six tracks, the video we’re presenting includes two of them together — “Golden Spine / The Heat Goes On“. Even combined, it’s a compact presentation, but long enough to create terror and ruination.

The opening moments create a feeling of intrigue but also discomfort, through a union of abrasive whining tones and threatening low-end murmurs. It’s almost like a warning of what is coming, and what comes next is a slow, stalking beat and a corrosive blast of searing sound. This sonic beast heaves forward, expelling gritty, harrowing screams and trailing almost hallucinatory vapors.

The drumming becomes maniacally battering, and weirdly tremulous tones (mellotron-like) pierce through the gouging and grating chords, along with those savagely shrieked vocals. And then sounds of mangling catastrophe become dominant. Gilded in ruinous distortion, warped tonalities and concrete-crushing mechanics gouge at the senses. Something hideous might be attempting to speak, but maybe it’s best not to think what that might be.

Ouroboros Lust was recorded and mixed by Hail Conjurer around the midsummer of 2022, and it was mastered by Harald Mentor. Credit for the cover artwork and photos goes to Tekla Vály. For more info about the new album, check the links below.
