One thing leads to another, and when the one thing involves alcohol consumption it might lead to a disaster or to a triumph, you never know.
This particular tale concerns a Finnish trio who took the name Tormentor Tyrant. Two of them — S. (guitar/vocals) and J. (drums) — had a history of playing together in such bands as Cataleptic and Solothus. To complete their lineup they brought in M. as bassist and vocalist, whose resume includes Corpsessed, Pestilent Hex, Tyranny, and Profetus.
The band was born in late 2020, but we’re told that the seeds of the idea can be traced back a few years earlier “to some obscure drunken nights when the trio had the innocent idea of ‘how cool would it be to just jam some early Deicide songs together.'”
That one thing led to another — the writing of original songs, albeit still under the influence of early incarnations of malignant metal as brandished by the likes of Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, and other similarly unhinged bands from South America and Europe dating back to the late ’80s and early ’90s.
And now, with a 2022 debut EP behind them, Tormentor Tyrant have produced a debut album with the entirely fitting name Excessive Escalation Of Cruelty, and it will be released on January 24th by Everlasting Spew Records.
No disaster here, but instead a triumph of evil metal, as you’ll begin to understand by listening to our premiere of an album track named “Capital of Pain.”
“One of the most savage, grinding, furious and primordial Death Metal releases you could hear this year!” That’s how Everlasting Spew presents Tormentor Tyrant‘s new album, and “Capital of Pain” makes those words ring true.
Tormentor Tyrant go full-throttle, hell-for-leather, discharging a vicious assault of swarming and eviscerating riffage, violent battery, bestial howls, and maniacal screams. The music sears and blares, stitches and throbs, thunders and whines, fronted by those truly demented vocals, like a demon horde in the throes of blood-lusting lunacy.
The song is a short sharp shock — damned evil, damned electrifying, damned good. The album will be an excellent way to begin desecrating 2025 before the young year leaves the crib.
Excessive Escalation Of Cruelty was recorded at Furnace 5034 and Rehearsalucifer Studios, produced by Tormentor Tyrant. The album was mixed by M.Malignant, mastered by The Hand of Doom, and features startling artwork by Roni Ärling and layout by Giorgio Spevo.
Everlasting Spew will release the album on CD, tape, and digital formats on January 24th, and they plan to release a vinyl edition in the late spring of 2025. They recommend it for fans of Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Skeletal Remains, and Laceration.
