GRAMMY vs GRAMMY: THE 2012 SPELLEMANN AWARD NOMINATIONS
A nice coincidence: Last night I saw Enslaved perform at a bar in Seattle. This morning, Enslaved were nominated for Best Metal Album of 2012 in Norway’s version of the Grammy awards, which are called the Spellemann awards.
The other nominees in that category are Nekromantheon for Rise, Vulcan Spectre and El Caco for Hatred, Love and Diagrams. You gotta love a country where fuckin’ Enslaved and fuckin’ Nekromantheon get nominated for Grammy’s. Songs from each of their albums made our list of 2012’s Most Infectious Extreme Metal Songs. Hell, last spring I even wrote about a song from El Caco’s album (here) — though the song is more hard rock than metal.
Contrast this with the American Grammy Awards: Although there were 81 award categories for 2012, there is no award for Best Metal Album. As close as we get is an award for Best Hard Rock / Metal Performance. And Halestorm won that award two nights ago. Uh huh.
The Spellemann awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Stavanger Concert Hall in Oslo on March 23. The nominees in all the remaining categories can be viewed here, though I don’t know why you would want to see them, because, y’know, not metal.
To celebrate the metal nominations in Norway, here again are the songs from Enslaved and Nekromantheon that made my 2012 infectious list, plus that El Caco video previously featured here.

you got to see enslaved!!! awesome!!!!
I did, and they were. Pallbearer, Royal Thunder, and Ancient VVisdom were also on that line-up. I’m still stunned all those bands were playing at a small bar instead of a much larger venue. I’m hoping to sort through all the photos and put the best ones up here with a short review by tomorrow.
I saw Enslaved on their Isa tour, up here in northern norway. Was maybe 50-100 people at that gig.
No Big surprise Enslaved being nominated. They have been nominated every album since Mardraum, and won 2-3 times before. I am actually half expecting Nekromantheon to have their name pulled from the nominations, like Immortal did when they were nominated.
Yes, I just got a press release that included this info:
This is the seventh time ENSLAVED have received a Spellemann Award nomination. They have won four consecutive times in a row for their previous four studio albums:
· 2010: Axioma Ethica Odini – WINNER
· 2008: Vertebrae – WINNER
· 2006: Ruun – WINNER
· 2004: Isa – WINNER
· 2003: Below The Lights – Nominated
· 2000: Mardraum – Nominated
I shall be seeing Enslaved in a bar tonight! Third time seeing them, and I know they’ll rule just as hard as last two! The band is phenomenal!
