(In this new installment of KevinP’s interview series, he talks with Mika Lammassaari, guitarist of Finland’s Mors Subita, who have a new album named Degeneration coming out soon — and we’ve also got the official lyric video for the new album’s first single, “End Complete“.)

K:  So it’s been 4 years since the release of your debut album, Human Waste Compression, fill us in on what’s going on?

M:  To be quite honest, the last 4 years have been just a mere glimpse, it´s gone past so fast. During this time we´ve toured with Mors Subita and written the new album, obviously. Unfortunately, we also had a couple changes in the line-up, so that has caused a few grey hairs.

All in all it´s been a lot of great moments and we´re more than excited to be releasing the successor to HWC. Right now, we´re doing the final prepping for the release of the new album and rehearsing a lot with the band.

K:  People may know your name from the other bands you are in, Wolfheart and Eternal Tears of Sorrow.  For those unfamiliar with Mors Subita, what can they expect?

M:  Musically, Mors Subita stands somewhere in between melodic thrash and groovy melodeath. I´d say we combine sounds from the 90´s metal like Carcass and At the Gates with modern metal elements. Lots of groovy riffing and drumming and a bit deranged vocals, in a good way.

K:  With your commitments in other bands, does Mors tour or get to play festivals?

M:  Eternal Tears of Sorrow is on a hiatus, so I´m only working with 2 active bands at the moment. The timetable dance is always a challenge, but it´s mostly with our day jobs clashing with music stuff.

Mors Subita has always been my main focus, so it´s never a matter of other musical endeavors taking time off of Mors. We try to do as much as possible and also maintain a certain state of sanity in the process.  I hope we get to play more live gigs all in all. We love it!

K:  Did Violent Journey Records currently being on HOLD cause you the need to look for a new label?

M:  Violent Journey actually stopped working a while ago. The decreasing momentum of the album sales forced them to quit. We´ve been working with another label called One Man Army which is run by Tuomas Saukkonen. The label also released the Wolfheart debut. We´re really fortunate to have Tuomas in co-operation with the release of Degeneration.

Degeneration will be released on March 20, 2015. Pre-order here (the pre-order includes two downloadable bonus songs plus an exclusive mercy bundle). The album is also available for pre-order at iTunes. Below, check out the lyric video for “End Complete”:

  1. Normally, melodeath so described can leave me wary that a song/band is gonna be kinda bland. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case here.

  2. Their previous record (Human Waste Compression) is one of my favorites of the last several years – right up there with Revocation’s Existence is Futile and Chaos’ Violent Redemption. Can’t wait to hear the new stuff! I just pre-ordered – thanks for running this story!
