Rearview Mirror

Though The Number of the Blog went to blog Valhalla long ago, I still stay in touch with its founder, Professor D. Grover the XIIIth. Recently he suggested that NCS might consider reviving the idea behind an old TNOTB series called “Morning Wood“. I thought it was a good suggestion, and so here we are… with the inaugural post of what I hope will become a weekly Sunday series, borrowing the “Morning Wood” idea but under a new name.

With very few exceptions, the music we write about at this site consists of recent, new, or forthcoming releases. In The Synn Report, Andy does provide monthly retrospectives about entire discographies of selected bands, and we’ve had a few other retrospective-style series in the past as well, but we mainly focus on the here and now. But the focus of this new Rearview Mirror series will be metal songs from the past. And I do mean individual songs — these posts are going to be short, but hopefully sweet.

Most weeks we may feature only one song. Sometimes we might have a small group of songs from different points in a band’s career. And maybe sometimes we’ll collect a few songs from different bands with some kind of common theme. But the main point is to feature songs from yesteryear, and keep our own verbiage to a bare minimum (or maybe no words at all). I’m hoping other writers for the site will contribute to this as well, so you’re not hostage to my own tastes.

To kick this off, I decided to look back at the 10 songs I picked as the “most infectious” that were released in 2009, our first year of existence. And from those I chose this one, which appeared on Asphyx‘ comeback album, Death… The Brutal Way.

  1. This is a great way to spread those everlasting, incessant infections of the past. I’m convinced this will be a nice addition to the annual spreading of the year’s new infections.

  2. Such a great album…It showed Asphyx could still go, even after a nine year layoff

  3. I think it’s a great idea. I thoroughly enjoyed Morning Woods back when Number of the Blog still lived. Greqt son choice too, I had never heard Asphyx before, only their name I knew.

  4. This sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and what a great song to kick things off! 🙂

    • Suggestions welcome. You know how to find me. 🙂

      • Dismember – Override of the Overture
Candlemass – Emperor of the Void
        Bolt Thrower – Cenotaph
        Convulse – World Without God
        Slugathor – The Smoke
Immortal – Where Dark and Light Dont Differ
        King Diamond – Abigail

…I can do this all day 🙂

      • Well, a real forgotten pearl is Axamenta’s last album “Ever-Arch-I-Tech-Ture”. Whole album is stellar but a single song, maybe “Demons Shelter Within “.
