Heavydeath is a trio of experienced Swedish musicians (guitarist/vocalist Nicklas Rudolfsson, bassist Johan Bäckman, and drummer Daniel Moilanen) who have been involved in many other projects (including Necrocurse and Runemagick). With session drummer Oldfor Suns standing in for Danel Moilanen, who has been performing with Katatonia as their live drummer, Heavydeath have recorded a new EP entitled Dark Phoenix Rising that will be released by Caligari Records on August 25, 2015, and today we’ve got for you the premiere of the EP’s opening track, “Dead Trees“.
I’ve had this song running through my head virtually non-stop since first hearing it. When other music tries to enter the picture, “Dead Trees” just bulldozes it out of the way and stomps it to smithereens for good measure. The song’s central riff is massive — and massively catchy. It hammers and vibrates and occasionally spirals up into the sky from the dank pit where it spends most of its time.
Anchored by a nimble, inventive bass line and organic-sounding drum rhythms, the song features a layering of lead guitar melodies and harmonies that venture out into psychedelic and progressive metal territories, accompanied by Rudolfsson’s bestial growl. So, in addition to being a bruising doom/death slugfest, the song is also mentally engrossing (or perhaps neuron-twisting would be a more precise adjective).
In a nutshell, it’s a hellaciously good song and a fine teaser for the EP — about which you will be hearing more from us in the near future.
The track list for Dark Phoenix Rising is as follows; all the songs are new except for “Bow Down”, and the version of that song on the EP differs from the previously released version:
I. Dead Trees
II. Bow Down
III. The Ember of the End
IV. From the Ashes
V. Dark Phoenix Rising
Preceding this EP, Heavydeath has released a series of other demos, and they can be found at the band’s Bandcamp page HERE, where this EP will also be available for digital download. Caligari Records will release the EP on limited-edition pro-print cassette tape. For information about how to order it, watch these locations:
