Reviews in Haikus

(Andy Synn returns to an old, irregular series of album reviews in haiku. Three reviews of three lines each come after the jump. With music, of course.)

This week is brought to you by the number “the”.

By which I mean that every band I’m reviewing this week is one of those “the something” bands.

Naming conventions aside though, they’re all quite different, running the gamut from leviathan Doom to scintillating Tech to totally not Metal at all, so whoever you are, there should be something to tickle your earbuds over the course of the next 5-7 days!

Let’s begin with some of my trademark pithy haikus, as I know some of you have been missing them and clamouring (quietly) for their return.

The Foreshadowing-Seven Heads Ten Horns

THE FORESHADOWINGSEVEN HEADS, TEN HORNS

Dark, but needs more spark.
Doomy. Gloomy. Passing through
Me. But leaves no mark.

Binary Code-Moonsblood

[THE] BINARY CODEMOONSBLOOD

Diamond in the rough.
Packs a proggy punch. Pristine
And yet immersive.

The Lion's Daughter-Existence Is Horror

THE LION’S DAUGHTEREXISTENCE IS HORROR

True grit (not the film)
And grime. Gruesome riffs for a
Damned generation.

  1. Nice work! I’m digging the Haiku format, it forces you to be concise and brutally honest. Looking forward to a haiku review of the next Swallow the Sun record.

    • Glad you’re enjoying them. There’s a heap of older ones you can find on the site as well, I just ended up letting them slide for quite a while (not entirely sure why) but got the urge to resurrect the series again out of the blue recently.

And yeah, they DEFINITELY force me to think a lot harder about what I’m trying to say (and, also, to imply, in not so many words).

  2. Gruesome riffs,I heard none.
    Out of all three.
    I did not like one.

  3. The Foreshadowing’s haiku hit the hammer on the nail. Almost. There is one song, however, that leaves a mark.
The quadruple closer Nimrod stands as one of the most infectiously memorable song of the year thus far.
Otherwise, the album is rather bleak and somewhat disappointing, espesially compared to their brilliant debut Days of Nothing.

  4. Had almost forgotten about that new Lion’s Daughter album – gonna have to get that one back into my rotation.

    • Yeah, I was surprised we hadn’t covered it in more depth. But this series of columns is a useful way of catching up on stuff we didn’t get round to reviewing properly at least.

  5. That Lion’s Daughter album is amazing. “Gruesome riffs for a Damned generation.” Well said. “A Cursed Black End” should be on NCS’s best songs of 2016 list.

  6. I’m only about half way through The Binary Code, but I think your 12 words have summed it up perfectly.

And… three, three bands beginning with “the”! *cue thunder and lightning* 😉
