Insanity has different root causes, durations, and effects. For example, there’s the chilling insanity that leads to serial killing, the mania that comes over some people who’ve just been cut off by some motherfucker swerving into their lane on the freeway, and the kind of madness that led to the invention of calculus. There’s also the quite invigorating temporary insanity produced by a blaze of metal capable of setting fire to a mosh pit. And that’s what we have for you here.

Become Insane” could be a command (which in this case would be difficult to resist) or a description of what will happen to you if you listen to this song (predictably accurate if you’re a lover of punk-fueled thrash). Either way (or both), it’s a fitting title for this track by Ohio’s Subtype Zero, which comes off their debut album The Astral Awakening, which will be released on August 24th by Seeing Red Records.

This band was once known as Cringe, the name under which they released a pair of splits (with Cease To Exist and Crypt Rot) and a 2016 EP (Through the Mist). Under their new name, they’re keeping the pedal jammed hard to the metal.

The blizzard of fretwork that propels this song from the starting gate is an immediate shot of electricity, and the wattage just zooms higher from there as the rhythm section kick into a hell-for-leather gallop and the vocalist begins venting the lyrics like a mad dog off the chain. A couple of flame-throwing solos add extra juice to this smoking power plant of a track.

The rush is over almost before you know it. The adrenaline it triggers will linger. We admit it’s a bit unfair to do this to you, to get you revved up so fast and then leave you hanging so quickly. If you only had the album in hand, you could keep the feeling going. But you can fix that on August 24th, because 11 more tracks of full-throttle anarchy on the album will become available then.

The Astral Awakening features cover artwork by R Yudha Saputra, aka Vrugarthdoom (Gatecreeper, Homewrecker). It was engineered and mixed by Andy Nelson and was mastered by JB Van Der Wal (ex-Aborted, DOOL). Seeing Red Records will release it on CD and digitally, and it’s available for pre-order now.

Look for Subtype Zero on stage later this month as they embark on “The Astral Awakening Tour 2018“. You’ll find the dates in the flyer below our stream of “Become Insane“.
