On July 2nd Comatose Music will proudly (and perhaps sadistically) uncage Apocalypto, the ghastly debut album of Anthropophagus Depravity from Yogyakarta in Indonesia, a record that Comatose sums up as “a gory tale of human sacrifice and mutilation delivered with fearsome musical prowess and ruthless, relentless force,” an album “spawned from nightmares” that “radiates fear and panic”, and one that will secure the band’s place “at the top table of brutal death metal”.
What we have for you today is the premiere of “Temple of Sacrifice“, a song that earns those words. It’s a cruel fashioning of terror in multiple visceral forms, an amalgam of cold, ruthless, methodical brutality and skittering, scrambling madness, all of it shrouded in an atmosphere of supernatural horror.
The music’s austere, brutalizing impacts draw their power from near-atonal, pile-driving, spine-shaking grooves, punctured by bursts of weaponized snare drumming, underlaid by what sounds like a rumbling avalanche in the low end, and joined by gruesome gutturals. The song’s more unhinged ingredients consist of insectile fretwork frenzies, outbursts of braying, whining, writhing, and miserably moaning guitars, and what might (or might not) be the gurgling and squealing of a tortured human voice.
And yes, there’s something creepy and preternatural about these sounds, due in part to the unearthly timbre of the twisted guitar accents but also to the song’s lurching introductory segment, which oozes misery, rot, and horror.
Comatose Music is now taking pre-orders for Apocalypto at the locations linked below. As Comatose warns, “prepare yourself for hymns of sacrificial slaughter, visions of death and pulverising death metal power. Terror such as you have never known awaits!”
