We don’t know who first coined the term “atmospheric black metal”, but it has obviously stuck. Its meaning, however, despite its wide usage, is somewhat vague. It suggests music that is more geared toward the creation of mood or visions kindled in the imagination than, well, music based more centrally on riffs and riots. But that still leaves a lot un-defined.

The vagueness of the term makes it a big umbrella, or a big tent, or whatever you want to call a canopy that covers a lot of people and the different things they’re doing, including people whose activities spill them outside the covering.

Which brings us to Michigan-based Crown of Asteria, the distinctive solo project of the musically prolific Meghan Wood. Now more than 10 years into its existence, Crown of Asteria has amassed a lengthy discography, one that has exhibited as much experimentation as it has been threaded with through-lines.

But while no year has passed since Crown of Asteria‘s inception without something new from the project (and usually several or many somethings), it’s been more than five years since the last full album — a span that will be closed on April 12th with Fiadh Productions‘ release of a new Crown of Asteria album named Cypher, which is the subject of today’s premiere. What we have for you here is the complete streaming premiere of a most unusual split release named In Tenebris Solis Occasum, which is being released by the New York label Fiadh Productions. It includes three tracks each from two solo projects, Michigan’s Crown of Asteria and the Chilean project Petricor. Our premiere coincides with the opening of pre-orders for the tape edition of the split.

All together, these six tracks provide a fascinating and highly varied experience. Both projects are connected to black metal, and with a broad brush someone might paint them both as “atmospheric black metal”. That’s always a nebulous term, but it’s even less informative in the case of this split, which really is impossible to sum up with a label or even a paragraph.

And so, many paragraphs lie ahead of you, though of course no one will give you a black mark for skipping down to the bottom and beginning to listen right away. Continue reading »

A couple of months ago we introduced our followers to Akashic Envoy Records through our premiere of a track from the self-titled debut album by the part-Ukrainian, part-American black metal band Ancient Hostility, which Akashic Envoy released in June. Today we’re presenting the premiere of music from another Akashic Envoy release.

This particular release was compiled in celebration of the label’s first six months of existence, and it’s a blowout celebration indeed — a box set of three cassette tapes that collectively include more than three hours of exclusive and rare tracks from 35 of the artists on the label’s roster. Entitled Transmissions from the Ætheric Plane, it’s set to ship on August 4th.

Each cassette is focused on one of the three main genres of Akashic Envoy‘s releases — black metal, dark ambient, and dungeon synth. From the first of those three tapes, what we’re bringing you today is a song called “Honey Fields” by Michigan-based Crown of Asteria. Continue reading »
