This is another daily collection of things I saw and heard this morning that I thought were worth sharing. It’s heavy on the death metal, because the death metal is heavy on me.

This is a big Goatwhore day. First, I saw the news that Goatwhore will be touring the U.S. and Canada with High On Fire and Lo-Pan. The tour begins on Nov. 15 in Austin and concludes on Dec. 22 in San Francisco. On selected stops, Primate (featuring Brutal Truth vocalist Kevin Sharp) and Corrosion of Conformity will also be performing.

This should be an ass-mauling, face-lacerating show. I’m happy that it’s stopping in Seattle, because it’s important to be happy for yourself in order to be happy for other people, or so I tell myself whenever I see stupendous tours that stop in Seattle but may not stop where you live. The full schedule is after the jump.

I also saw that Goatwhore have today premiered a new official lyric video for “Death To the Architects of Heaven”, a killer song from their 2012 album, Blood For the Master. You can watch that after the jump, too. Continue reading »

January ended four days ago, so it’s past time for our usual monthly round-up of news about forthcoming albums. I have to confess that this list is even more spotty and sporadically assembled than usual — which is saying something. Various distractions prevented me from keeping a sharp eye out for news about new releases, so I have no doubt this list is incomplete.

Here’s how this round-up usually works: In these METAL IN THE FORGE posts, I collect news blurbs and press releases I’ve seen over the last month about forthcoming new albums from bands we know and like at NCS (including occasional updates about releases we’ve included in previous installments of this series), or from bands that look interesting, even though we don’t know their music yet. In this series, I cut and paste those announcements and compile them in alphabetical order.

Remember — THIS ISN’T A CUMULATIVE LIST. If we found out about a new forthcoming album earlier than the last 30 days, we probably wrote about it in previous installments of this series. So, be sure to check the Category link called “Forthcoming Albums” on the right side of this page to see forecasted releases we reported earlier. For example, on this list you won’t see such notable releases as the forthcoming albums from Meshuggah, Enthroned, Unleashed, Psycroptic, Goatwhore, Asphyx, Naglfar, or Autopsy, because we’ve mentioned them elsewhere. Or at least I think we did.

Having said all that, please feel free to leave Comments and tell all of us what I missed when I put this list together. Let us know about albums on the way that  you’re stoked about, even if you don’t see them here! Continue reading »

General Surgery is a name that all properly educated death metal and goregrind fiends will know quite well. Originally formed in 1988, this group of Swedish butchers released an influential EP on Relapse Records in 1991 called Necrology. Then they sort of dropped out of sight until returning in 2002 with numerous splits, EPs, and two full-length albums.

Today I read the news that General Surgery has rejoined Relapse. To celebrate the joyous reunion, Relapse is going to release a compilation of 30 General Surgery tracks on March 27 under the name A Collection of Depravation. This thing, which can be pre-ordered here, will include cuts from General Surgery’s previous split releases, and they’re being digitally remastered by none other than Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer fame. It will also include a 24-page booklet with liner notes from the surgeons. (Hey Scott, where my goddamn new PD album?) More details about those 30 tracks are after the jump.

But hey, that’s not all. General Surgery has already recorded a five-track EP of new songs. I love the title of this new EP (and I think Dismember would be proud): Like An Ever Flying Limb. There’s no release date yet for the EP.

Oh, and guess what? The band is also working on their third full-length album for release “in the near future”.

And guess what? It looks like General Surgery just recently established an official facebook page HERE. If you hurry, you can be the 25th person to like them.

And, guess what? Since General Surgery is now on my mind, which is kind of like having leeches in your nose, I’m gonna include some General Surgery tunes after the jump. Fuck yes. Continue reading »
