AN NCS PREMIERE: BUENSUCESO — “THE TULIP CURSE CAME WITH THE ARRIVAL OF FALL”
As you can see, the title of the song we’re about to premiere is an unusual and intriguing one. Other equally out-of-the-ordinary song titles are to be found within the six-song album from which it comes, an album that itself bears a mysterious name: ANALOGY: The Sun | Divided Line. This is the second release by Buensuceso from the town of Mancha Real in Spanish Andalusia, set for release by Third I Rex and The Braves Records in January of the new year.
The selection of music titles isn’t this band’s only sign of distinctiveness. For example, some of the songs include the contributions of such instruments as saxophone, double-bass, e-bow, and synthesizer, in addition to the usual tools of metal. And conceptually, the new album takes inspiration from Platonic philosophy and “The Allegory of the Cave“: “It observes the existence of an unreal world, focused on the blindness of an oblivious society, which is forced to accept the insipid, conformist and inhuman reality that lies behind human beings.”
This particular song (which has no vocals) is one that invites you to enter a waking dream state. It changes as it moves forward, casting an immersive spell of increasing power as the mood of the music seamlessly changes, even as the core of the melody persists. It gradually adds layers, beginning with solitary guitar picking and a sludgy, rumbling bass and then growing more entrancing (and haunting) with the appearance of a second, slow, reverberating guitar melody.
A shimmering new layer of melody comes in as the rhythms and the song’s aura become more vibrant — as if you’ve cast your eyes skyward and witnessed rapidly passing clouds edged in the gold of the sun. When the song ends, you may have to shake yourself to remember where you are, perhaps wishing that your mind could still wander on the path the music was showing you.
Well, you may have different visions as you listen than I did, or experience different emotions than the journey from somber wistfulness to blissful revelation that I experienced. But I’ll be surprised if the song doesn’t set your mind free of your surroundings in some memorable way.
To repeat, Analogy will be released by Third I Rex and The Braves Records on January 29, 2017. The album art was created by Procesonegro Art Studio, inspired by silent movies from the early 20th century. The full track list is as follows:
1. With a puff of wind, the fire of the cave went out and its shadow disappeared with unfulfilled desires.
2. On the one hand, the poor put down, surrendered bought all the things were taken, much cohesion, a lot of sweetness.
3. The tulip curse came with the arrival of fall.
5. She needed two words to apologize… Whilst, he needed an eternity to be forgiven.
6. Fate forgive us.
