(DGR catches up with the new record by Canada’s Fractal Generator, which was released in January by Everlasting Spew Records.)

You’ll likely be reading this one way out of chronological order given the tendency I’ve developed with this album to want to dive back in, write a little, crawl back out, and then dive back in again.

As a result, there’s been multiple discs from the moment this review started that have coasted into and out of my purview.

But, needless to say, as of recent I have been absolutely buried in a wall of incredibly dense Death Metal.

And while I’m talking about multiple albums one could also ascribe that feeling to Fractal Generator‘s newest album Macrocosmos all on its own.

AN NCS PREMIERE: FRACTAL GENERATOR — “AEON”

More than six years have passed since Fractal Generator launched their debut album Apotheosynthesis, a significant span of days to be sure, but not nearly long enough to dim the eye-popping, jaw-dropping impressions of that debut, all of which came roaring back when I learned that Fractal Generator would be returning with a sophomore full-length, the name of which is Macrocosmos. It will be released by Everlasting Spew Records on January 15th.

However, six years is long enough that some of you might only now be encountering this Canadian band for the first time. I looked back at what I wrote to accompany our three premieres for Apotheosynthesis (which included a stream of the album as a whole), and found this passage:

“Their music displays a lot of technically barn-burning fretwork and hyper-blasting drum technique, perhaps not completely machine-like but most definitely head-spinning — the kind of dizzying experience that simulates giving your brain a ride in a high-speed centrifuge. And the music also includes some cold, eerie melodic elements that, when coupled with the instrumental exuberance, conjure images of alien technicians either constructing or dismantling some massive device or edifice beyond our understanding”. Sometimes the name that a band chooses for itself can be a significant clue to the kind of music they make. The name Fractal Generator sounds kind of cybernetic and machine-like, although fractal repeating patterns across multiple scales of size are evident in nature as well as mathematics. But then consider further that the members of this band from Sudbury in Ontario, Canada, identify themselves by number: 040118180514 (bass, vocals), 040114090512 (drums), and 102119200914 (guitar, vocals). And then consider that the name of their debut album is Apotheosynthesis.

The album was originally self-released by the band in 2015, but it has now been embraced by Everlasting Spew Records, which is releasing it on CD and digitally today (May 19th). To help spread the word, we’re bringing you a full stream of the album in video form. Continue reading »

It may be fun to speculate about what all these names signify about the music, but I’m afraid we’re going to spoil some of the fun by premiering a Fractal Generator song from the new album.
