AN NCS PREMIERE: NIHIL KAOS — “ETERNAL GENESIS”

Nihil Kaos is a Turkish band whose members have been scattered among three countries — Finland and the Netherlands in addition to Türkiye. But despite their geographic dispersal they have maintained a musical vision that’s startling to witness. Whatever they may do in their personal lives in such different places, when they join together as artists they have devoted themselves to a vision of black metal that is jaw-dropping in its explosive depictions of chaos and terror, but also reaches heights of magnificence and depths of haunting tragedy.

More than 9 years have passed since their last album Noxkult. In that time they’ve participated in a 2018 split with Djevelkult and Kyy, and in 2021 they released a stunning long single named “Triumphant Silence of Void” (reviewed here) in tribute to the band’s former vocalist Iconoclast, who died earlier that year.

At last, Nihil Kaos have finished a new album named Mystagogue, which includes the performances of new vocalist Tleps (Acherad, Kyy) in addition to those of its other steadfast members. It will be released in the first quarter of 2025 by Mara Productions. It is described as “a harrowing journey into the chaos where the band was born and where we all shall return”: “The power of that chaos, the tragedy of it, the beauty and even the terror of it. From omega and back to omega.”

A baker’s dozen of new songs and videos is a lot to take in, but that’s what I’ve compiled here, and since we’re in the middle of Dead Week it seems entirely fitting for me to throw it your way now.

This 13-band round-up is the result of me going deep down a music-listening rabbit hole last night, a topsy-turvy underground descent in which I didn’t encounter any metal bands other than relatively obscure ones. My head was spinning by the end, and I hope yours will be too.

I did attempt to arrange the following items into “blocks”, but I make no promise that the arrangements will always make sense to you. Sometimes they barely made sense to me. I do promise you a real musical roller-coaster ride, and hope you’ll not jump out before you get to the end. And of course I had to pitch a curveball at the end.

P.S. I picked up the name “Dead Week” from this recent essay in The Atlantic, which perfectly sums up the oddities and attractions of this blank space that stretches between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Abysmal Lord-Disciples of the Inferno

 

This is the second part of a two-part post I began earlier today, the purpose of which is to collect new music that I discovered in an extended bout of listening yesterday, most of it from bands who were also new discoveries. It gets the Shades of Black label because much of it is black metal, though as you’ll discover, there’s quite a lot of diversity in these songs.

ABYSMAL LORD

In August of last year we premiered a song from a debut EP named Storms of Unholy Black Mass by Louisiana’s Abysmal Lord. That EP was a hell of a debut, and now the band have completed their first full-length, which is scheduled for release on November 27 by Hells Headbangers. The strength of the EP would have provided reason enough to look forward to Disciples of the Inferno, but the first advance track from the album (“Sabat”) seals the deal. Continue reading »

I plowed through a lot of new songs yesterday and found a lot to like. Most of it happened to be death metal, though not quite all. So I decided to skip the “Seen and Heard” title for this round-up in favor of a more descriptive lead-in. Also, I found so much to recommend that I’ve divided the round-up into two parts. The second one will come a bit later today.

SKELETHAL

I loved this French band’s previous 2014 EP Deathmanicvs Revelation with an unholy love. I have little reason to doubt that I will experience similarly unnatural attractions to their new one, Interstellar Knowledge of the Purple Entity. Apart from my intense desire to obtain more knowledge about The Purple Entity (!), the advance song that became available for listening this weekend is like an aphrodisiac for the ears.
