If today is a holiday for you, we hope you’re enjoying it, regardless of whether it has any ecclesiastical meaning to you. If it’s not a holiday for you, we hope it will be a good day for you, too.

We don’t observe any holidays at NCS, not because we’re against them, but because from our first year the goal was to post something every day of the year, a goal we’ve kept with very rare exceptions. I can’t exactly remember why I set that goal (come on, it was 9 years ago!), but probably because I thought our best chance of getting readers was to be out there on days when there was no competition. Now, we keep doing it out of sheer stubbornness.

Since it is Christmas Day, I thought about exclusively going with metal that has some kind of holiday theme, but with a trio of exceptions at the end of this giant new-music round-up, I tossed that idea out the window, unless you count the introductory music from Rotting Christ. And why wouldn’t you?

ROTTING CHRIST

My NCS colleagues and I seem to be having a disagreement about RC‘s new album The Heretics. One of us, who shall remain unnamed, thinks it’s repetitive and boring, a distillation of the sound of the last three or four albums but lacking in dynamic peaks and troughs. A couple of us (including me) acknowledge that it’s basically Rotting Christ firmly in their established groove, but is nonetheless a whole lot of fun. Continue reading »

Almost one full year has passed since my roving eyes were struck motionless by the news that Jonny Pettersson (Wombbath, Just Before DawnAshcloudHenry Kane) and Dave Ingram (EchelonDown Among The Dead Men, ex-Hail Of Bullets/Bolt Thrower/Benediction) had joined forces in a new death metal band named Ursinne.

And now three months have passed since the release of their stupendous debut album, Swim With the Leviathan, through Transcending Obscurity Records. No true devotee of old school death metal should have missed that signal event, but now is a good time for a reminder for those who might have.

The reminder comes in the form of a music video that we’re premiering today for the album’s 10th track, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” — and yes, yes it does. Continue reading »

During the first week of December last year our roaming eyes alighted upon a piece of very exciting news, i.e., that a death metal super-group had been formed under the name Ursinne, consisting of the uniquitous Jonny Pettersson (Wombbath, Ashcloud, Henry Kane, SYN:DROM) and Dave Ingram (Echelon, Down Among The Dead Men, ex-Hail Of Bullets/Bolt Thrower/Benediction). Now we have more details about this new project as well as the premiere of the first song from their debut album. The album’s name is Swim With the Leviathan and the song is “Devil May Care“.

The album will be released on August 20 of this year through Transcending Obscurity Records, and Ursinne’s line-up also now includes bassist Sonia Nusselder (Sepiroth, ex-Ecocide, ex-Shade of Hatred). On the album, Jonny Petterson performed all instruments (and he created the cover art as well) and Dave Ingram wrote the lyrics and gave his powerful voice to them., with a guest assist by Massacre’s Kam Lee on the track “Monsters In the Parasol”. wolfheart-boneyard

Happy Monday. Through the miracles of modern technology, I’m writing this at roughly 38,000 feet above the earth, somewhere across the deserts of northern Utah, the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and the barren panhandle of Texas. Under duress from my fucking day job, I’m bound for Houston for the next couple of days.

Actually, it’s not exactly a miracle, not something like turning water into wine, more like turning water into weak tea — because although I can get online, the service isn’t good enough to stream music or videos. So some of the items I’m including in this round-up are things I can see but can’t hear.

WOLFHEART

I’m beginning with an item that I could have heard over the weekend if I had known it was out there. Unfortunately, I discovered it only today after boarding this jet I’m on. It’s a video for a new song by Finland’s Wolfheart named “Boneyard“. Continue reading »
