Work, work, work.  That’s me right now, though I would rather be blog, blog, blog. So this will be short.

MARDUK

You know Marduk. They’re from Sweden. They play tumultuous black war metal. They have a new album coming on May 28 called Serpent Sermon. The album cover is after the jump. So is the first song from the album, which premiered yesterday on Metal Hammer. It’s called “M.A.M.M.O.N.”

It’s not exactly what I was expecting from Marduk, which is not a bad thing at all. Yes, there are bile-vomiting vocals. Yes, there are weapon-like blast beats and double-bass. Yes, the guitars come in menacing waves. But there are changes of pace in which the guitars also ring out slow, chiming melodies while the bass audibly bounds along beneath them in a jazzy progression. Interesting.

MITOCHONDRION

Mitochondrion are from Canada. I wrote a long feature about them here. They play a style of apocalyptic, atmospheric death metal that some people call war metal. They performed at the RITES OF DARKNESS festival in San Antonio, Texas, last December. Their performance was recorded, and it can be downloaded for free via these links:

Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?p0vqf2sysps7973

However, the audio was also re-mastered by Ferenc Teglas to make it clearer, and the re-mastered audio can also be downloaded here (be sure to click only the bottom-most download link on those Sendspace pages, or you’ll get some kind of software crap that you don’t want instead of the music). I’m giving you these links separately from the ones above, because these are .wav files, which means the files are BIG . . . but the sound quality is definitely better.

The music is . . . obliterating. Below the Sendspace links is a stream of the first 18 minutes. I converted the file from .wav to mp3 so it wouldn’t take forever to upload.

Mitochondrion Live at “Rites of Darkness”

I found that new piece of cover art on Mitochondrion’s Facebook page. I haven’t had time to figure out what it’s for, but I sure as fuck like it.

DEATH GRIPS

Death Grips is not exactly a metal band. They’re not exactly anything else either. We last wrote about them here. Epic Records plans to release two new Death Grips albums this year. The first of the new albums is called The Money Store. It will be out on April 24. A couple of songs have already surfaced. Yesterday, a third one appeared.

The song is called “The Fever (Aye Aye)”. You can download it for free via the Soundcloud player you’ll find on this page. Death Grips also simultaneously released a video for the song, which you can watch below.

I don’t much like rap music, but I like Death Grips. It’s like rap music from Aldebaran, trying to pull your head apart so alien spawn can move in and live there and use your brain for a squeeze toy.

  1. Im also really fucking busy right now and will be for the foreseeable future, so I dont have time to think of a clever comment. I’ll just say thanks a ton and keep pumping out the hot ness. I sincerely appreciate your efforts!

  2. Digging the new Marduk and Death Grips, even though I wasn’t a fan before (of Death Grips).

Work for the money for a way to get away from the work for the money for a way to get away from the work for the money for a way to get away from the work… You get the idea 😛

    • I gets it. And thanks.

      • It’s better than the pre-cycle known as: work for the money to go in debt to go to school to get a job to work for the money to get away from the work.

        • I do coke so I can work harder so I can make more money so I can do more coke so I can work harder so I can make more money so I can do more coke so I can work harder…

          • I think I’m beginning to get the hang of this. I blog to get away from the work to get behind in the work to have to work harder to catch up with the work to want to blog more to get away from the work.

  3. That’s the artwork for Mitochondrion’s Parasignosis which you posted here. Ya boob…
Loving the new Death Grips though. One’s first taste of Marduk has been quite pleasing as well.

On another note, is this the Aldebaran you speak of? [Not that one is familiar with it…]

    • About the album art, I was just testing to see if you were paying attention, and you get an A! Now, what is the air speed of an African swallow?

As for Aldebaran, I was referring to the red giant star in the zodiac constellation of Taurus, but that other Aldebaran looks pretty interesting.

  4. Marduk isn’t war metal. They’re just straight up black metal.

    • In their case, I was referring to the lyrical themes about WWII that have been in their music off and on since Panzer Division.

      • Dont worry man. No one who listens to war metal, calls it war metal. The preferred term now is “bestial black metal”

        …knowing is half the battle

        • ..damn should have gone with “One to grow on” instead.

I demand an edit button…I feel naked without one

  5. This new Death Grips album is going to be another mindfuck… and I mean that in the best possible way.

  6. I can’t wait to hear more Death Grips! I just found this cool site where you can piece together different part of their video for Retrograde. It’s pretty cool and fun…definitely worth messing around with. 🙂 http://thirdworlds.net/retrograde/

  7. On a related note: Mick Barr and Zach Hill

At first, one thought, “MICK BARR and Zach Hill!” Now, one thinks, “MICK BARR and ZACH HILL!” Zach Hill’s a nut… (O_O)
