Well, my list of 2020’s Most Infectious Extreme Metal Songs died a sad death, allowed to wither away from neglect. I made it from Part 1 through Part 17, which collectively included 47 songs, and then I just never got back to it. I posted Part 17 on February 9th of this year, which was around the time when my day job started crushing me, and Part 18 never arrived. At some point in early March it dawned on me that it would be kind of ridiculous to try to pick it back up so long after 2020 ended. And then I kept forgetting to even do this “wrap up” post.

Some of you might think that I should just provide a list of the songs I never got around to, instead of writing features for each one as I usually do. That would be a logical idea, except I don’t know what all the other songs would have been. I always mostly make up this list as I go along, and there are still hundreds of tracks on my 2020 candidate list. It’s better to just acknowledge that we’re done for 2020.

Below you will find links too Parts 1 through 17 of the list as they appeared over time before time ran out, and of course the names of all the songs.

I do want to thank everyone who suggested songs for the list, from the readers who left so many good recommendations in the Comments on this post last November to my NCS comrades who offered some of their own.

For the stat-heads out there, the 47 songs on the 2020 list compared to 60 songs on the 2019 list, 99 on the 2018 list, 78 from 2017, and 71 from the year before that. I’ll stop there, because the lists go all the way back to one for 2009, the first year of NCS‘ existence.

Looking ahead, I started making a list of candidates for the 2021 installment of this feature as soon as the New Year began. By the time we get into the fall, I’m sure it will be as gargantuan as ever, and then I’ll again be inviting readers to expand it even more. Hopefully I’ll do a better job making the next list of choices more complete.

P.S. If you check the comments below you will see that someone has put together a Spotify playlist for the songs listed below, and what a generous act that was. Thank you Unholy Vortex!

    RIP Part 18 lol

  2. NCS is part of our lives Islander. Sometimes your fucking Day job keep you away from our daily feed of subversive sounds. Sometimes life’s high and low throw our mind away so that New music doesn’t cure or gives power as familiar ones do. However, step by step an invisible force leads us back to our musical shelter, NCS. So don’t blame you Islander. You’re there, we are.
