Grave Desecrator-Dust To Lust

The Brazilian hellraisers in Grave Desecrator had their beginning in 1998 and since then have released two albums, a couple of EPs, and splits with the likes of Archgoat and Black Witchery. Last fall they signed a pact with Season of Mist for the release of their new third album, Dust To Lust, which has now been scheduled for detonation on July 1.

Even those of you who have been brutalized by the band’s music in the past may be curious about what Grave Desecrator have wrought in the five and a half years since their last album, and today we bring you a sign as we premiere a track named “Temple of Abominations“.

The band have previewed the music themselves in these words about the song from bassist Élson “El” Necrogoat: Continue reading »

Behexen-The Poisonous Path

If you’re wondering about that thundering black mass of a storm on the horizon, the one with the boiling fires of Hades at its center and crackling tendrils of lightning that spear the earth in a fury, it’s not a natural phenomenon. It’s the approach of a new album by Behexen.

The fifth full-length by these infamous Finnish demons fittingly bears the name The Poisonous Path, and it will descend upon us on May 27 via Debemur Morti Productions. In this post we bring the premiere of its first advance track, “Chalice of the Abyssal Water“.

Four years after Nightside Emanations and almost 20 years after their first demo, Behexen show no signs of repentance or fatigue, but instead a dedication to further perfecting their hellish black art. Continue reading »

Epidemia-Leprocomio

Although South America has been home to some of the world’s best death metal and thrash bands going back to the 1980s, the high country of Ecuador is less well-known as a spawning ground for metal extremity than some of the other nations on the continent. Yet Ecuador is home to Epidemia, a band who proudly carry on the tradition of adrenaline-fueled savagery launched by such groups as Sarcófago, Sepultura, and Sadism. Their forthcoming second album, Leprocomio, follows the first one by a decade, but this is certainly a case of better-late-than-never — as you’ll discover through our stream of the album’s second track, “Retribución Homicida“.

Every now and then, as a public service, I warn people to sit down before listening to some of the music we stream on this site — unless you actually feel like getting knocked on your ass. This is one of those times. You do get a bit of warning from the song itself: The opening snare fusillades and that meat-grinding riff that goes along with it send up the red flag, but it still probably won’t prepare you for the absolute decimation to come. DOOM177LP1_12Jacket_3mm_spine_all_sides.indd

It feels like June is going to be the start of murder season this year. I’m not sure of the exact date, so just circle the whole month in red on your calendar, preferably with someone else’s blood. Sometime that month, as best we can tell, Doomentia Records will release a split LP by Mordbrand from Sweden and Gravehill from Hellheim, California (aka Los Angeles).

The LP will combine two new EPs, one by each band with separate artwork, and they deliver two different but equally lethal forms of death metal slaughtering. Mordbrand’s half is entitled In Nighted Waters, and Gravehill have branded their offering with the name Skullbearer. Today we have for you the premiere of one of Mordbrand’s five tracks on the split, “Cold Womb”, as well as a stream of a Gravehill song called “Upon the 6th Chime”.

MORDBRAND: “COLD WOMB”

I’ve been following Mordbrand since their debut release in a 2010 split with Evoke and have spilled words about virtually everything they’ve released since then. They were very good at the start and have only gotten better. Two of the band’s three members, guitarist-bassist Bjørn Larsson and vocalist Per Boder, were involved in the recent revival of the legendary God Macabre, and maybe that experience has added an extra dose of morbid energy, because In Nighted Waters is sounding like Mordbrand’s strongest work yet. Rabid Flesh Eaters-Reign of Terror

Reign of Terror is the kind of classic barrage of electrifying sound that ought to put a big goofy smile on the faces of all heavy metal fans. And although it’s the debut release by Rabid Flesh Eaters (from Arlington, Texas), it’s clearly the product of people who’ve got metal in their veins instead of blood and a deep knowledge, experience, and affection for full-throttle mayhem. You’ll have a chance to hear what I mean through our premiere stream of the whole album — which is being released today.

On this date five years ago, the late Mike Scaccia (of Rigor Mortis and Ministry fame) agreed to record the album, and he also contributed a scintillating solo on its opening track, “Lycanthrope”. The production quality will be one of the first things you notice about the album — the sound is so powerful, so sharp, and so immediate that it’s as if you’re right inside a room with the band — a room whose walls are being blasted outward by the explosiveness of the sound. And although Scaccia‘s solo is a thing of beauty, there are white-hot solos salted all the way through the album that will make you want to raise your clawed hands to the sky (check out the one in “B.T.K.”, for example, if you want to really get bug-eyed by the shred). Lustravi-Call of the Blackened Veil

The sun-drenched shores of Panama City in Florida’s Bible-thumping panhandle may seem like an unlikely spawning ground for a knife-wielding black metal band like the one menacing that prostrate nude up there, but that’s the place Lustravi call home. Their debut album, due for release by Obscure Musick in early May, is named Cult of the Blackened Veil, and we bring you a taste of what it holds in store through our premiere of “Evil Incarnate“.

The song certainly claims kinship with a particular flavor of black, satanic Scandinavian savagery, but the path it carves draws upon other other musical traditions as well. Continue reading »

Au Champ Des Morts cover

Debemur Morti Productions have discovered yet another gem amidst the great piles of detritus that litter the metal scene. This time the band is a young French group named Au Champ Des Morts. ACDM was founded in 2014 by Stefan Bayle (Anorexia Nervosa) and Migreich (VULV). DMP will introduce them to discerning listeners through the release of a debut, two-track 7″ EP entitled Le Jour Se Léve and will follow that later this year with the band’s first album. What we have for you today is a stream of the EP’s title track.

The song is not confined by rigid genre boundaries, though black metal beats at its heart. At the start, the music crashes like waves driven by a storm surge, with a moving blast-front of intensely emotional melody pierced by savage vocal cries. After that initial gale of ripping guitars and pulsing rhythms, the force subsides, replaced by ethereal guitar notes and the ambient shimmer of keyboards. Continue reading »

We’re venturing off our usual beaten paths with this premiere and entering into a realm populated by wraiths.

The track is aptly named “Apparitions Revenge” and it will appear on Ensuring the Bloodline Ends Here, the debut release of Gridfailure, the new solo project of David Brenner (Theologian, ex-Heidnik, Vise Massacre, etc.) .

We are told that Gridfailure emerged without forethought through the artist’s recent experimentation with unused material collected from various solo recordings. Over the course of the album’s eight tracks, the sonic creations manifest “the abuse of electric and acoustic guitar/bass, violins, harmonica, keyboards, electronics, chimes, drums, bongos, den-den daiko, chains, bells, and more, in addition to the infusion of other components not limited to incineration, bizarre weather systems, tools, and mammals.” Continue reading »

Fractured Insanity-Man Made Hell

Have you ever wanted to strap yourself to the nose of a jet fighter and then have the pilot fly you into a hurricane? How about wanting to crawl under a pile-driving machine and let it punch your body into a fragmented pile of goo and bone? Or wishing that you could dive right into a school of frenzied, feeding piranha and commune with them in their single-minded bloodlust? Yeah, of course, everyone would love to do these things. But how often do we get the chance?

Well, if you don’t know any fighter pilots or have ready access to a construction site or live near the Amazon, you can still very easily listen to Man Made Hell, the new album by Belgium’s Fractured Insanity. In fact you can listen to it right now because we’re premiering a full stream. Continue reading »

Withered-Grief

It has been a long wait for a new release by Atlanta’s Withered, and so for ardent fans of the band like those of us at this site, it was exciting to learn last fall that a new full-length (eventually named named Grief Relic) was finally on the way. At about the time of that revelation, Andy Synn prepared a report that included reviews of all the band’s releases up to that point, and we began waiting to find out whether the passage of years had diminished or enhanced the band’s powers.

We all got our first clues last month when a song called “Husk” premiered at DECIBEL (here) and another called “Feeble Gasp” was unveiled by Revolver (here). Those songs provided convincing proof that the more than five years since Dualitas have not dulled these blades. Time seems only to have honed them, sharpening the music’s cutting power and amplifying its almost physically tangible impact. But we have still more proof that Grief Relic has been worth the wait, because today we bring you the premiere of yet another new song, this one appropriately named “Distort, Engulf“.
