(Today we premiere a full stream of the new album by Cosmic Atrophy from Biloxi, Mississippi, preceded by an introductory review by Vonlughlio.)

As you, my dear readers, already know by now, my small reviews usually focus on bands in the Brutal Death Metal genre (one of my favorites). Nevertheless, I do like other genres as well, such as Death, Black, Black/Death, and Doom Metal, just to name a few. But when given the opportunity to write for NCS,  I wanted to focus on a genre that could use more exposure. Also, Islander and the team of writers do a fantastic job in promoting/writing about all the main genres here.

With that being said, in my time here at NCS I have written about some non-BDM such as Mournful Congregation, whose release last year I was privileged to write a few words about.

This time around I am very fortunate to do a small write up for Cosmic Atrophy‘s sophomore album The Void Engineers. Simply put, it is for me how Progressive Death Metal should sound, and it has impacted me immensely. Continue reading »

INHUME: A PREVIEW OF THE “EXHUME” COMPILATION AND AN INTERVIEW OF BEN JANSSEN

(On December 7th Xenocorp will release a special 25th-anniversary compilation of remastered material across the long career of the Dutch extremists Inhume. In this post Vonlughlio provides a preview of the release, including music, and an interview of the band’s guitarist Ben Janssen.)

This small preview is about Inhume, a Dutch BDM/Grindcore band that was founded back in 1994 who have released albums and shorter releases that for some (including me) are classics.  However, this project has not gotten the recognition it deserves, despite creating  quality music that is pure raw aggressiveness and reminds us of a golden era in the underground.

They have released some demos, splits, and four albums that are fast, deadly, in-your-face BDM/grind; the band just wants to rip your face off.  But their last release was the full-length Moulding The Deformed back in 2010, so you might understand that I’d given up on more music until I saw a FB status from the Xenocorp label that they would be releasing a compilation collecting all of Inhume’s demos and splits, tribute tracks, and previously unreleased material. POST MORTAL POSSESSION: “PERPETUAL DESCENT”

(This is Vonlughlio’s review of the new album by Pittsburgh-based Post Mortal Possession, which was released on November 17th by Lord of the Sick.)

This time around I was given the opportunity to do a small write-up for Post Mortal Possession‘s debut album Perpetual Descent, which was just released by Lord of the Sick Recording. This band is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was formed back in 2013. Prior to this debut full-length, they released two EPs,  Possessing Entity back in 2014 and Forest of the Damned in 2016.

I became aware of the band’s existence when The Chicago Domination Fest 2017 lineup was announced and their name was among the ones to be found there. So, I decided to check their EPs and thought they were good — there was talent for sure — but (at least for me) nothing special. Continue reading »

For me this year in Brutal Death Metal has been another good one. I’ve found new bands, and more familiar ones have released new material that’s been better that their previous efforts. In my last appearance at NCS my small write-up was for a band called Insidious Squelching Penetration that I recently discovered and just fell in love with at first listen, and I mention that because I’m now turning to another band that came out of nowhere to take over my soul.

The band is Certainly Demented (and they certainly are), with their debut album Inhaling The Fragances of Insanity, to be released via Lord of the Sick Recordings this November 15th. Continue reading »

(For your disgusting pleasure, Vonlughlio reviews the debut album by the sickos in Insidious Squelching Penetration.)

As I mentioned in my last small write-up, for me 2018 has been a good year for music, especially in the BDM genre. I’ve particularly enjoyed discovering bands that came out of nowhere to blow me away with their releases, including Galvanizer and The Heretics Fork. Just wonderful music that keeps the listener engaged for every second. Such is also the case for this band called Insidious Squelching Penetration and their debut album, Writhing in Darkness, which was released October 12th via Lord of the Sick Recordings.

I first found out about the band thanks to a FB post from the label promoting their demo Delectable Rectal Mind, so I decided to check it out and bought it from the band soon after. This demo had the rawness I like in Goregrind and a straightforward approach, with songs below the one-minute mark (which is typical in this genre). The vocals went hand-in-hand with the music, and reminded me of Last Days of Humanity. Continue reading »

(This is Vonlughlio’s review of the debut recording by The Heretics Fork, which will be released by P2 Records on October 31st., and whose name refers to this torture device used in the Inquisition.)

For me 2018 has been a good year in music, across different types of metal genres. As some of you know by now, I usually review albums in the BDM genre, though from time to time I do write about albums outside that genre. This time I’m about to speak of a band that took me by surprise, which I discovered through a FB post in a group I am part of.  The band is The Heretics Fork.

We don’t know where they are from or who the musicians are behind this project. The only thing we know is that they are signed to the P2 label from New York. This label serves as a distro as well. They were responsible for the release of Encenathrakh’s debut self-titled album (which Islander reviewed here) — one of the craziest BDM projects ever to be released. Continue reading »

BURNING FLESH: “HUMAN FLESH FERTILIZER”

(This is Vonlughlio’s review of the third album by the multinational group Burning Flesh, which was released in March of this year.)

I spent a recent Sunday afternoon, while recovering from an illness, catching up with some music I had missed earlier. I recalled that at the beginning of the year a friend of mine suggested the band Burning Flesh in a FB convo, and I turned to their third album Human Flesh Fertilizer. I went back and found the play-through video for an album track he had sent me and revisited it. Shame on me that I did not pay more attention back then.

This band has members from Switzerland and France and they have been an entity since 2005, releasing a demo in 2007, a debut called Unconscious Deformity in 2010, and a sophomore album in 2013, New Chaos Order. I decided to listen to those previous albums and then re-listened to the new one. Despite the constant change in members, it’s apparent that guitarists Diego and Anthony have been able to maintain a permanent vision of what the band should be, and therefore they obviously form the core of this project. (This is Vonlughlio’s review of the debut album by the Spanish brutal death metal band Fixation On Suffering, which is set for release by Pathologically Explicit Recordings on October 28, 2018, but is streaming at Bandcamp now.)

This Sunday sitting in my favorite chair I am listening to some new albums, including the one I am going to talk about today by a new band (formed in 2016) called Fixation On Suffering. They hail from Spain and are signed to Pathologically Explicit Recordings.

This band made their debut back in 2017 with their EP Relevation of Tortured Imprisioment. It showcased a level of musicianship that was well-respected in the scene, and vocals that got the job done. This 15-minute EP was a good one, and made me look forward to new music, though I felt it did not get the promotion it needed and faded away behind so many other releases. PYREXIA: “UNHOLY REQUIEM”

(On September 14th Unique Leader Records will release a new album by NYDM band Pyrexia, and here we have Vonlughlio’s review of the album.)

As I sit in the santuary part of the house on a Saturday night, being sick, I have been thinking about the early- and mid-’90s living in the Dominican Republic and being a metalhead. It was a time when you would go to small get-togethers and see local bands perform, and to talk music with that guy who seemed to have all the info, as well as cassettes (I’ve mentioned him in some of my previous small write-ups). Sure, it was not a perfect time, but people weren’t uptight, and if you liked a band, cool, and if not, that was cool too. Nowadays, well, it’s not the same, but I won’t get into that.

So, why was I going back down memory lane?? Well, it’s because I had been given the opportunity to write about Pyrexia’s new album, Unholy Requiem. This band, founded in 1990 in New York, made waves in the scene with their demos and their 1993 debut album Sermon Mockery, one of the best Death Metal albums to be released and a true classic, at least for me. That album is ferocious, unapologetic, and in-your-face, with everything working together perfectly, from the riffs to the vocals, the drums, and the production work. This band, along with Suffocation, Internal Bleeding, and Dehumanized, were bands who left a mark in the scene, and that will be forever evident. Continue reading »

EXPULSED: “KINGDOM OF DESOLATION”

This time around I am going to introduce you to a small label located in the depths of Ukraine (Reality Fade Records) founded by Dimitri in 2016. I was fortunate to discover the label when it had only released three albums. Through interactions on Facebook I became friends with him, and from there I saw that he had a clear vision of what to do with the label, with a focus on bringing out music that he was passionate about, without focusing on commercial consequences.

From there, Reality Fade signed many bands, such as Interminable Corruptions (whose first album I reviewed here, and placed on my 2017 year-end list as well), Coprobaptized  Cunthunter, Habitual Depravity, Dymorfectomy, Decomposition of Entrails, MDMA, Ineffable Demise, and ByoNoiseGenerator (whose new album I reviewed here), to name a few. But the subject of today’s small write-up is the Australian band Expulsed and their debut album Kingdom of Desolation. Continue reading »
