AN NCS PREMIERE: ZORNHEYM — “A SILENT GOD”

Today the Swedish band Zornheym are releasing their new single “A Silent God” through Non Serviam Records, and we are helping spread the word through our stream premiere of this new song. “A Silent God” will appear on Zornheym‘s album Where Hatred Dwells, And Darkness Reigns, which Non Serviam plans to release this coming winter.

Regular followers of our putrid site may remember that in August we premiered this Stockholm band’s first single from the album, “The Opposed“, which also provided a first glimpse of the album’s concept, which revolves around the horrors of the Zornheim mental institution and its inmates. When the album arrives, it will be accompanied by a comic strip created for each track by artist Anu Bring (Märvel, Evil-lÿn, Satan’s fall). The Greek band Aenaon have already made a name for themselves as one of the most interesting, inventive, and distinctive black metal bands on the planet, and their new album Hypnosophy will only burnish that reputation to an even brighter sheen. It well warrants the perhaps overused term “alchemical”, as Aenaon have drawn together a multitude of base elements from disparate genres and transmuted them in wizard-like fashion into music that’s rare and mesmerizing. As a further example of the intriguing delights that Hypnosophy will bring your way, we present the premiere of a lyric video for the album’s second track, “Fire Walk With Me“.

The band have commented on the song as follows:

“Ιnfluenced by David Lynch’s film, this title was chosen as an inspiration for a hymn about the mythical creature, Phoenix. The element of fire is represented by the maelstrom of multiple instruments that are combined to create a Promethian atmosphere. It concludes all the distinctive elements of the Aenaon sound whirling into a fiery musical vortex”.

In music, as in other art forms, complexity is the proverbial double-edged sword. Depending on how it is wielded, it can heighten intrigue and interest, transfixing the listener in following its labyrinthine pathways, or it can result in a jumbled mess that perversely becomes monotonous. In our humble opinion, the band whose new song you’re about to hear succeeds in making the intricacy of their composition seductive, while at the same time creating a dark and disturbing aura and ultimately branding the song in your head.

The band in question is the French group Derealized — one woman (vocalist Myriam Fischer) and three men (guitarist Man Fischer, drummer Victorien Delacroix (ex-Diluvian), and bassist Mat Roger) who meld technical skill and inventive songwriting techniques in ways that are impressive, but without losing their grip on the qualities that make a song a song, and a memorable one at that. The song is “Isolation Poetry” and it’s the title track to their new album, which will be released on October 21 by Finisterian Dead End. Continue reading »

AN NCS PREMIERE: BLACK HOLE GENERATOR — “A REQUIEM FOR TERRA”

Ten years ago a band named Black Hole Generator released a debut EP called Black Karma. After that long absence Black Hole Generator is returning with a debut album entitled A Requiem For Terra, which will be released next month by Dark Essence Records. Consider this about the people who have participated in it:

First, there is the creative force behind Black Hole Generator, Vulture Industries’ main man and long-time Taake and Helheim producer Bjørnar E. Nilsen. And then there is guitarist Arve Isdal (Ice Dale) of Enslaved and Audrey Horne, plus Gjermund Fredheim (Taake/Orkan) contributing lead guitars on three tracks, as well as additional guitars by Dag Terje Andersen. Also, the distinctive Romanian artist and musician Costin Chioreanu made the cover art.

Sixteen-minute songs present a challenge for bands who compose them, because they present a challenge for listeners. Long attention spans are not exactly a hallmark of modern culture or society. But when a band succeed in holding their listeners’ attention for songs of such length, the experience can be even more rewarding than songs of more conventional duration. And that’s what the Irish band Soothsayer have done on the song we’re about to premiere for you. Its name is “Umpire” and it appears on Soothsayer’s new album At This Great Depth, which will be released on December 30 by Transcending Obscurity Records.

This is the band’s second release, following their 2015 debut The Soothsayer. It consists of two songs, of which “Umpire” is the first; the second, which is not as long, is “Locusts and Moths”. Continue reading »

Across four albums beginning in 2008, the music of the Austrian band Karg has changed with the moods and maladies of its sole creator, J.J., who is also a member of the fantastic Harakiri For the Sky. A fifth album named Weltenasche will be released in November by Art of Propaganda, and it reflects still further changes in Karg’s musical journey. As a sign of what it holds for listeners, we’re pleased to bring you the debut of the album’s second track, “Alles wird in Flammen stehen“.

The song exerts a powerful attraction, interweaving elements of black metal and post-rock, combining hard-driving rhythms and pummeling heaviness with shining, shimmering lead guitar melodies that cast a haunting spell. Continue reading »

Last fall we had the pleasure of premiering Godless Shrine of Decay, an album-length compilation of music by the Brazilian death metal band Escarnium. Godless Shrine was released by Redefining Darkness Records to pave the way for the band’s new album, which will be released on October 14 by the same label in North America and by Testimony Records in Europe. The name of the new album is Interitus, and today we’re able to bring you a full stream of the album on the eve of its release.

Since the band’s founding in 2008, they’ve released one previous full-length, 2012’s Excruciating Existence, and a handful of shorter offerings. As a retrospective, Godless Shrine of Decay documented the maturation of this band over time into a group of ravagers with a knack for writing and executing songs of soul-plundering savagery and relentless ruthlessness. As evidenced by this new album, they have developed a truly impressive, sure-handed mastery of evil, primal, old school death metal. Continue reading »

We have three months left in 2016, and there are still can’t-miss releases on the horizon before we reach New Year’s Day. Judging by the stunning new song you’re about to hear, we’re compelled to say that the new album Lunaris by the long-running Polish band Arkona will be one of these. The album is set for release on November 4 by Debemur Morti Productions, and the name of the song is “Ziemia“.

Arkona must be considered among the pioneers of Polish black metal, with demos that date back to 1994 and a debut album (Imperium) released in 1996. Lunaris is the band’s sixth album in that long career, and the second following a span between 2003 and 2014 when the band only participated in a few splits. This is their first album on the Debemur Morti label. Continue reading »

In December of every year our putrid site rolls out a list of the year’s “most infectious” extreme metal songs, as chosen through our own infallible judgment. This song we’re about to bring you by the Norwegian band Slegest has vaulted onto the list like Superman leaping a tall building in a single bound.

With the song you’re about to hear, we’re taking a few steps off our more usual beaten paths. The song doesn’t fracture skulls or lacerate flesh, but it definitely has an irresistible effect on the body and the mind — and one that grows ever stronger as it unfolds. The name of the song is “Onyx” and it appears on Kala, which is the fifth album by Queen Elephantine, due for release on October 21 in a variety of formats by a consortium of different labels.

To be honest, I wasn’t familiar with the band before delving into this album, but you can now count me among those intrigued and fascinated by the music. For others who may also be discovering Queen Elephantine for the first time, the group was originally formed in Hong Kong in 2006, moved to New York the next year, and are now based in Providence, Rhode Island. The line-up hasn’t remained fixed over time — and no fewer than 10 people are credited with contributions to the music on Kala. Continue reading »
