Jan 122023

We posted the last of our many year-end lists on January 2nd. If I’d had my mental shit in working order I would have quickly followed that with the annual wrap-up providing links to all the lists we published, but I forgot to do it… until today.

As in years past we posted an extensive series of lists for 2022. As usual, some of them were re-postings of lists that appeared at “big platform” web sites and print magazines, and others were prepared by our own stable of race-horse writers. But once again we had a large group of lists from other guests and old friends. Plus, we’ve again received valuable, extensive lists in reader comments on THIS POST (new lists can still be added there).

In this article I’m setting forth links to all of the 2022 year-end lists that we published, divided into categories and listed within each category in the order of their appearance. For people who are looking for the best metal that 2022 had to offer, these lists and our readers’ lists provide a tremendous resource, as they have in past years.

Heart-felt thanks again to everyone who contributed to 2022 LISTMANIA and to everyone who made time to read what we pulled together. A lot of people put a lot of effort into this series, as we do every year, but I can tell from the page views that it continues to mean something to fans of heavy music, and so we’ll continue doing it.

P.S. We have one kind of 2022 list that is still rolling on, day-by-day — my own list of last year’s Most Infectious Extreme Metal Songs. If you want another way to re-engage with the metal of 2022 and perhaps still make some new discoveries, hopefully you’ll find that a fun way to do it. You can see where that stands by following this link.

  1. No Austin Lunn this year?

  2. Thoroughly enjoyed it, as usual. Surgical Brute’s list is a big miss, but cheers to everyone else for the monster effort!

    • Sorry that the spam filter snagged your comment at first. I didn’t think Peter was going to do this again, and it’s fun to see that he did — even though he decided not to include any of the NCS lists in his calculations, apparently because we don’t have any site-wide list but only individual lists from each writer. (He writes: “I cut some corners this year, and compiled mostly if not only publications’ general lists, instead of all the personal lists. This to make up for two things: time, first of all and obviously, but also because I felt that some publications were weighing too heavily on the calculations because they just have a lot more personal lists.”)

  3. why. lists of peoples favorite albums are as bad as politics.
