abigail-williams-new-song-2016-photo

Almost exactly one year has passed since the release of The Accuser, and now at last we have a new song from Abigail Williams to share with you. This is a demo track that will eventually appear in final form on a future release. Its origins can be traced back to a time soon after the release of the band’s third album, Becoming, in 2012 (with the original version co-written by former AW member Ian Jekelis and AW’s Ken Sorceron), though it has been revisited and revised more recently by Sorceron.

The name of the song is “The Final Failure“. At more than 11 minutes in length, it’s a multifaceted and emotionally intense track that alternately smolders and burns, like a campfire that’s dying in a frigid and hostile wilderness despite efforts to revive it. Or it could be felt as an expression of beleaguered striving in the face of one bad twist of fate after another, ultimately ending in failure and a staggering collapse into desolating grief. natvre-wrath

As all lovers of extreme metal are well aware, Greece is home to some of the planet’s most powerful and distinctive black metal bands. As the years have passed, the “classic Hellenic sound” of the early and mid-’90s has morphed and expanded in a multitude of directions, reflecting the still-vibrant creativity at work in the Greek underground. NATVRE’S is one of the newer exponents of black metal from Greece who have managed to establish their own distinctive style within their homeland’s traditions of burning black ferocity.

NATVRE’S are based in Thessaloniki, and they self-released their debut album Wrath in 2015. The copies disappeared quickly, selling out in just a few months. But the Dutch label Argento Records knew a good thing when they heard it and are now primed to re-issue Wrath in a 3-panel digisleeve CD edition with enhanced artwork. We’ve written about one advance song from the album already (“Lazarines“), and today we get to bring you the premiere of another savagely crushing track, this one named “Endless“. Continue reading »

Wombbath05

As you can see, Jonny Pettersson has one of the most epic beards in metal. As those of us know who saw him front Wombbath at this year’s Maryland Deathfest, he’s also a charismatic stage presence with a huge, ferocious voice — which has put teeth and guts in releases by not only Wombbath but also such bands as Ashcloud, Just Before Dawn, Vholdghast, and Syn:drom. With 20 years of experience in extreme metal dating back to the early demos of Disfigured Victims, Pettersson has now turned his talents to a solo project named Henry Kane, whose debut album Den Förstörda Människans Rike will be released in February by Transcending Obscurity Records, and today we’ve got the premiere of an album track named “Skuld Och Begär“.

You might recognize Henry Kane as the name of the soul-devouring supernatural antagonist in the Poltergeist film series, and there’s a soul-devouring quality to the music on the album, too. But the music is also a twist on the styles of Swedish death metal that have typically been Pettersson’s meat and potatoes in his other bands — as you’ll discover in this blast furnace of a new song. foad-cover

I’ll spell it out for you: Fuck Off and Die. I’m not talking about you, of course. But Sweden’s F.O.A.D might be. Their debut album Birth of Extinction is being released today by Mythrone Promotion and Defense Records, and we have a full stream of the album for your ears. It takes no prisoners.

Birth of Extinction may be the band’s full-length debut, but F.O.A.D (who are based in Västerås) are not newcomers. They trace their roots to a formation in 1986, although an extended hiatus followed their birth before their first demo Demo-Nical appeared in 2014. Birth of Extinction includes that demo as well as an even earlier song, “Morbid Truth”, in addition to the seven most recent album tracks. Continue reading »

still-image-from-the-michel-anoia-video

(Austin Weber brings us another premiere, this time a video for a song from the new album by Michel Anoia.)

Way back in the early days of 2016, our esteemed editor Islander premiered a song called “Two Mountains” by the mind-boggling metal force from Lyon, France known as Michel Anoia. As he often does, he then tipped me off to the group, figuring it’d be right up my alley. He couldn’t have been more correct, as their new album Plethora has become one of my all-time favorite albums for the entire year. Now, as usual, things somehow strangely have come full circle as we unleash an exclusive music video premiere for one of  the songs on Plethora  called “La Terreur d’Exister”. Continue reading »

negative-symbols-without-voices

Berlin-based Benedikt Willnecker has performed on stage as the bassist for Der Weg einer Freiheit and was also bassist and songwriter for Ära Krâ, both of them bands we’ve praised repeatedly at our site, but he has now struck out on his own with a solo instrumental project called Negative Symbols. On November 30, Negative Symbols will release its debut album Without Voices, and we have a full stream of this riveting new release for you today.

The album is a substantial 47 minutes in length, but it’s so engrossing that the pace of time seems to change as you listen, passing in a flash or perhaps even standing still. Stripped of vocals and lyrics, it evokes direct emotional responses in an interplay between the changing moods of the music and the experiences that have shaped where you live in your own head. sithter-chaotic-fiend

Chaotic Fiend is the name of the new album by the band Sithter from Tokyo, Japan, and it’s also the name of the album’s opening track. The song, in the band’s words, is “our invitation from hell”. And so it is.

While rooted in the traditions of sludge/doom bands such as Grief, Eyehategod and Buzzoven, Sithter push their music into realms where psychosis, violence, and psychedelic hallucinations reign. They’re bone-breakers and conjurors, equally capable of bending necks and administering psychoactive poisons straight to the bloodstream. The album’s title track, which we’re bringing your way, is a good example. Continue reading »

Stench Price album art

When Austin Weber introduced our early-September premiere of a song and video from the new album by Stench Price, he referred to them as a “supergroup on an obscene scale” with a “highly adventurous” approach to grindcore that has enabled them “to rise above the majority of garden-variety grind in the modern era”. As further proof of the truths in those statements, we have another new Stench Price song and video for you today. The name of this track is “Living Fumes“, and it features Dan Lilker of the legendary Brutal Truth.

Stench Price is the brainchild of Siberian composer and bassist Peter Shallmin (EscapethecultKamlath), and in aid of his nefarious cause he enlisted not only Danny Lilker but also these other notable names from around the world: Continue reading »

arcade-messiah-iii

Six days ago we wrote about a recently released video for a song called “Revolver” from a new album by the UK band Arcade Messiah. A few days later Arcade Messiah released a massive second track (“Deliverance”) through the alternative music site Arctic Drones. And now we have the pleasure of announcing the premiere of a third song: “Life Clock“. Like “Revolver”, it comes with an engrossing video made by darwinfish105.

The album that includes these three songs (and three others) is the third Arcade Messiah full-length, and it will be released through Bandcamp on November 25. Arcade Messiah is the solo project of UK musician John Bassett, who is also the singer, songwriter, and producer of UK progressive metal band KingBathMat.

Attempting to capture the music on the new album in genre terms is difficult, but one could say that it combines progressive metal with post-rock, sludge, doom, and stoner rock. It’s a fascinating interweaving of sounds and styles that should appeal to fans of bands ranging from Cloudkicker to Mastodon to Russian Circles, and beyond. Continue reading »

ordog-the-grand-wall

Earlier today I asked our readers to share their nominees for our list of the year’s “Most Infectious Extreme Metal Songs”. I have my own big list of candidates, and the album you’re about to hear is home to multiple songs on that list. The album’s name is The Grand Wall, and it will be co-released by Solitude Productions, Moscow Funeral League, and Frozen Light on November 21.

This is the fifth album of the Finnish doom/death band Ordog, but for me it’s my introduction to Ordog’s music — and a hugely compelling introduction it is. As you’ll see, the band describe the album as “more aggressive compared to the previous ones”, but with melancholy going hand in hand with the aggression. As I listened to it, I thought it would appeal to fans that cut across the swath of such groups as In Mourning, October Tide, early Paradise Lost, and even Bolt Thrower. It’s an earthshaker and a headbanger, and on the other hand, it’s also deeply (and hauntingly) entrancing.

I have some more thoughts about the album, which has quickly become a late-year favorite of mine, but I’ll first share some comments by members of the band: Continue reading »
